im thinking about switching to Skinny. im currently on Slingshot. and im using a Netgear Orbi without a modem on Slingshot, because Slingshot supports VLAN.

but Skinny doesnt support Vlan, only supports PPPoE

i m just wondering, say , if i buy a Netgear router (Not a Modem), will the router actually work on Skinny broadband without the use of a Skinny Modem?

thanks

Hi your current setup will work, but you will just need to turn off the vlan setting in the orbi.

Hi yes you will need to setup pppoe if not previously, it's pretty straightforward and yes all do support it, it's the most common connection method.

Hi no just the orbi directly connected to the chorus ont, see the link in my post above.

Cyril

Edit, with fibre there is no, Modem, just a router, treat the ont as the modem for all intents and purposes

Edit, just to clarify using the above settings, set it up as if for Spark, but dont tick the "Enable Vlan/Bridge group" as Skinny is identical to Spark, but with no vlan10.

And Orbi Wan connects directly to ONT

Cheers bro. Thanks a lot for clarifying.

This. You only need a modem for an xDSL connection. UFB just uses a router, however a number of ISPs supply a single device (modem/router combo) that works with either technology.

I’m just curious, I have a Google wifi router (the round one), does it work with Fibre? I haven’t tried it yet, and I don’t think it will work with fibre.

Hi a recent firmware update that your Google WiFi may or may not have received, does support vlans on the WAN, personally the Google WiFi is a duff product, leave it in the cupboard.

Lol. Yeah. I only got the Google wifi because that’s the only router that can easily limit my wife’s internet time, so that she has more time to do more housework. Lol
I know. Both Orbi and Google wifi are useless, Orbi is slow processor. So I use the Google wifi to off load some burden from Orbi.
I want to buy a nicer router , but just haven’t got the money to buy coz they are such expensive toys, can’t afford anything these days now, unfortunately.

I think Skinny insist on providing you with their router, which is free on contract (maybe just a post and handling fee), but you don't have to use it

Its an ok(ish) AP, defiantly don't use as a router (especially on PPPoE Connections)

This. Unless if you’ve got a very good reason not to, you should always use the router provided. In your case you should use it…
