Just a heads up about using older phones on WiFi with the spark smart modem 2 router.
Make sure you turn off 5 Ghz option in the routers settings, as my Samsung S6 kept dropping the internet saying internet may not be available, it was unusable.
Since the change, it hasn't happened at all.

I am not familiar with this router AP but is there a chance this is radar interference? Does the AP have an option to disable DFS?

Give 2.4 and 5Ghz different names / SSID's and test

This sounds like DFS is enabled. You shouldn't disable 5GHz... There are common how-to's here but basically the stock settings are fully compatible with basically all devices: https://www.spark.co.nz/help/internet/broadband-help/spark-smart-modem-2-support/

 

Also, don't separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz - there is no point.

 

You can however set up a guest network on this router and use that perhaps with this phone on 2.4GHz only which is the better option if you're still having problems and can't find where to disable DFS.

Here is a good reference to WiFi spectrum use... Shows shared Radars and DFS use on 5GHz, etc ...

As others have said don't turn off 5GHz WiFi.

 

Maybe the SM2 can't auto regotiate a suitable 5GHz WiFi bandwidth that suits your phone. Manual bandwidth setting may be required.

 

I used a SM2 for a while and found it was auto allocating excessive bandwidth on 2.4GHz WiFi that would not allow my recent model of a Brother laser printer to connect.

 

Manual reducing WiFi bandwidth on 2.4GHz fixed my problem and my printer connected reliably.
