I am considering moving to Spark 4G wireless from ADSL.. with a directional antenna.

And I play some games on adsl, and I can ping my local is 10ms from my house in ChCH to Spark ChCH Server.
I tried ping on my cellphone and get 130ms

What is the ping that you can get on your spark 4g wireless? can you advise if you have an antenna as well?

Sitting at work, turn off the WiFi and my Spark phone falls down to 3G, with 87ms ping and 4.89Mbps download :-\

We have great fibre broadband in NZ but the cellular coverage in many urban areas is not flash.

At Whangamata we're on Skinny (i.e. Spark) wireless broadband. Outside of holiday periods we typically get about 30Mbps, can't remember the ping times. On holiday periods it gets overwhelmed and speeds become too slow to stream TV, and barely enough to web browse.

Sadly we don’t have fibre or VDSL

In that case, is there a local WISP you could look at, as well as 4G?

39ms ping - Upper Hutt, Wellington so not rural.

Skinny wireless (aka Spark) using a Huawei B818. I was running a B618s and found the B818 far superior.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Interesting about the modem as we have the old B315s - will changing to B818 itself increase the download speed?

There are several B818 modems for sale on TM - are they all the same and compatible to swap out for my original Skinny provided modem?

10/2 for $150 per month, that's ADSL speed

Yes a big bump, I used to get 25-50mbps with the B618. Same location is now 100-150mbps.

My B818 is actually a Vodafone model. I just inserted the Skinny SIM with no changes required. Previous comments on the forum suggest its SIM locked to the Huawei "family" of hardware so I was pretty confident it would work.

I see now that the current Skinny model is what they call a "Fleximodem" and is the same thing as the Spark "Smart Modem 2". Several of those on TM too. Might take a punt and grab one of those.

The Smartmodem2 is a way better device than the B315. Not only is it more efficient on mobile network resources, it gets way better speeds AND has way better wifi. If you're not getting one direct, bear in mind I think there is a SIM size difference between the 315 and SM2. (I can't remember for sure since it was so long ago I changed over)

Cheers - N
