Still an outage listed? https://www.chorus.co.nz/outages

Sounds like the Chorus issue is unresolved.

Have deleted dhcp client and setdetect internet to none

Changed firewall masquerade out interface from ether1 to pppoe-out/skinny

And now seems to be working again.

can you explain what the previous settings did?

Fallen for this before. Default is actually disabled, so this one's OK. It would need disabled=no to be active.

Hi everyone, not sure if this is the case in this particular situation, so take it with a grain of salt please!

Spark supports only PPPoE.  Some third party routers have BOTH DHCP and PPPoE enabled on the WAN interface.  This can and does cause issues, and my recommendation for anyone is to disable DHCP on the WAN interface if this is enabled.  At first glance it would appear some of the config snippets above do this for the Mikrotik does exactly that - but I don't claim any experience of expertise with the make of router.

Let me explain what can and does happen when you have both DHCP and PPPoE enabled for anyone who is interested in the techy details:

Sometimes following a connection interruption, due to the connection timers on a customer's router and a bit of random chance, the DHCP connection attempts to come up before the router tries PPPoE - and doesn't come up as we don't support it.  When this happens the connection is basically put into quarantine for a few seconds by the network.  During this short quarantine period any connection attempt (either PPPoE or DHCP) will be ignored.  Once the quarantine expires the connection is allowed to reattempt.  If it tries DHCP again, the same thing will happen .. but the length of the quarantine will get longer.  So what can happen is that the connection will stay down until by random chance at the end of the short quarantine period the next attempt just happens to be a PPPoE request, and the connection will come up.  Depending on the vendor implementation and a bit of random luck this may take a very long time in some instances. This leads to unnecessary session recovery times following a service disruption - which no-one wants!

Hence we don't recommend or support this configuration of having both PPPoE and DHCP enabled on a WAN interface.

Most "home" routers its either PPPoE or DHCP in the wan settings so you're not going to get struck by this.

Mikrotiks are unique in that you can add a PPPoE to interface which also has a DHCP client.

From my network logs I can see that Asus routers are likely trying to do both PPPoE and DHCP.
