Hi Folks

Does Spark modem/routers provide port forwarding?

I cant seem to get a specific port open (6281) to my synology NAS which has a static IP

I have the same modem/router with Skinny and was able to open ports and test.

Btw all of Spark.co.nz webpage appears to be offline so I cant see what model of router I have.

Cheers.

So its a spark specific issue? My spark modem just went down which is funny as their website is offline as well.

I will test as soon as it comes back up for you.

There areublic comms on twitter regarding the website, though I don't think the port forwarding thing you've mentioned is related.

Maybe some further details of your configuration would be helpful, like NAS IP (which is hopefully static), a screenshot of what you're doing with the port, etc.

Spark NZ on Twitter: "We’re aware of an issue currently impacting our back-end systems. This means customers may be unable to call Spark, access our website, app, voicemail services, or their Xtramail. Because our systems are currently down, the opening of some stores may be delayed today. 1/2" / Twitter

Does spark use CG-Nat?  If op doesn't have a static public IP then you may have difficulties port forwarding.

I believe there's CG-NAT on fixed wireless, but otherwise no.

My question was going to be what kind of broadband do you have? if its FWA then you wont be able to port forward due to CG-NAT unless you have a static ip

Port Forwarding on xDSL/Fibre should be fine

Port forwarding is bad anyway you should be using some kind of CDN (Cloudflare for example)

I should have mentioned I have fixed broadband fiber from Spark, although no static Public IP or anything but this shouldnt matter with what I'm trying to do.

As a separate test, I was able to access my wireguard VPN installed on a rPi on the same Spark network (although port checking websites say that port (51820) is blocked which is really weird)

On my LAN I have my NAS with static IP will post details with screensnips later but just thought I'd get some feedback from the forum

Might be one of those end-user proofing things that some provider modems have done (I don't know if the Smart Modems do that), you could try setting an alternative port and giving that a go?

I tried another port for synology rsync (873) which didnt work either.

So current conclusions is that either is a synology device specific issue OR a spark model issue which isnt allowing certain ports to be opened (it did allow wireguard port 51820)

My use case is that I have two synology NAS and I was trying to setup a remote Hyperbackup solution. The destination network (Spark) is where the port forward isnt working.

My source is where I use (Skinny) with same model of modem/router the port forward works like a champ. So destination NAS is able to backup to source for now as a test.

Btw on a unrelated topic it appears  Skinny.co.nz is also down?

There is a major Spark outage currently affecting a whole lot of stuff (including Skinny).

Regarding port forwards - what are you trying to forward? You'll note that Wireguard is UDP which will show as "closed" by most scanners. You can also use something like Tailscale to take care of most things without opening ports.

IMHO, I would not be forwarding RSYNC. Also I would be very careful with what you're forwarding to your Synology else you could end up in a whole lot of trouble with your Synology getting exploited / compromised. Normally, there isn't any need to forward anything if you're backing up to another Synology as you'll instead just use Sharesync for this:

The Spark Smart Modem does support UPNP so ports should be automatically configured.

Managed to get home and get a screensnip of the ports I am trying to open/test.

Running Spark Smart Modem (VRV9517)

  1. Have set the NAS (192.168.1.101) as a static IP on LAN
  2. Port 51820 is open and I can confirm it works with my Wireguard client (this is to securely access my home LAN remotely)
  3. Port 6281 to NAS doesnt appear to work. Port checker says closed

Thanks for this info, will explore Tailscale as an option but still useful to have Hyperbackup run natively using its defined port if Tailscale doesnt work.

Opening ports exposes risk especially to a NAS device. If you don’t need to open ports and can do it via a VPN like Tailscale that should always be the option. Tailscale works well on basically anything you chuck at it.

Thanks for your suggestions on Tailscale, followed some guides to setup Tailscale on both NAS and setup Hyperbackup task

Considering the risks removed all Open ports

For anyone trying the same you can follow the guides below

How to start Tailscale manually
