Just bought a Smart Modem 2 second hand and want to update the firmware to the latest, Spark support has proven useless so thought I'd try here. Can anyone point me to where I can find it?

Spark's website has the Smart Modem 1 firmware but not the Smart Modem 2.

Thanks.

Firmware for SSM2 is not publicly available. Should update automatically if required.

Hmm I don't see anything to check for updates, how long should it take? It's been running for over 12 hours.

I saw in an old post you were on 2.01.10 build02-20220331 which is newer than mine.

Currently on 2.01.16 build02-20230317

Not sure how long it takes - really depends on Spark. Have a feeling they occasionally push to the devices using device management as opposed to the devices being able to pull.

Should eventually update unless one of the Spark team here can request an update for you.

They just check in and update themselves.

Unless if there is an actual issue with the router then don't worry about it...

It is also a little unfair to call Spark support useless. These routers are designed in a way where the end user doesn't have to worry about firmware updates or anything as these are pushed out. I also don't think Spark can force this, you'll just need to wait.

They can force updates - couple firmware’s ago I had problems with the firmware where by the router was not responding to external icmp requests even when it was allowed. Team pushed a roll back until the issue was fixed and then received the latest firmware. Saying this - had to coordinate via GZ. Not something I think one could do via standard support though.

Yeah that's the key. This isn't something support normally does.

Hi there,

Firmware updates are usually very quick - usually within a couple of minutes of connecting the modem to the network you'll have the latest firmware.

If you PM me the details I can take a look.  Please provide the modem serial number in the PM.  Thanks.

The Smart Modem 1 firmware on the website is v6.00.18, the current version on mine is v6.00.24 build02.

I have a Spark SmartModem1 (model VRV9517) and the Firmware (v6.00.24 build02) has been the same for ages.

I also have 2 SmartMesh (model WE410443B-SP) with wireless backhaul and I don't think they'll work if I upgrade the main modem router ... will they? I really should wire them back to the router but this will involve crawling around on broken sharp rubble in the basement so will keep avoiding that job.

Hi have a spare Skinny Fleximodem sitting around which looks the same as a Spark SmartModem2 - would that otherwise be a worthwhile upgrade over my SmartModem1? Will it mesh with the SmartMesh units?

Apologies for the dumb questions.

Thank you for those comments @cbrpilot. How do you know with a Spark/Skinny router when updates have ceased being issued? (EOL).

That is a difficult one to answer.  I'm not party to the commercial agreements between Spark and the vendors who actually provide the home routers.  Firmware updates for each home router are infrequent.  The latest generation of Spark routers (SM2, SM3 and SM5G) are more likely to get firmware updates.  The nature of the updates is generally minor fixes of various features.

For previous generation equipment I guess you can never say never, but less likely.  Please note that this is just my view/opinion etc.
