I find it pretty weird that telecom and yahoo are giving away a xpressmusic 8500 when the only 2 current models of it are not suitable even for telecoms new network? (850/1900 or 900/2100)

This would be like GM giving away some accessory that would only work on a ford!

Either that, or they have knowledge of a new model that noone else does.. Hope its that because its a nice phone and I want to be on telecom when it launches...

That's what happens when Telecom gets in an agreement with a provider based in Australia. This looks like a Yahoo! promotion and the guys in Australia probably don't even know what kind of network Telecom offers here.

Yahoo!Xtra are based in Parnell. The free Yahoo.co.nz services that are monetised through advertising (including competing Mobile operators), which differs from Telecom premium services xtra.co.nz which come free with Telecom broadband

The promotion appears to be jointly done with Nokia to promote the 8500...  ...the Nokia ph won't work on Telecom's current CDMA network. Vodafone frequently places ads on Yahoo!Xtra too so I wouldn't read anything into this
