Dear old Ma has been migrated from copper to wireless landline.

Reading documentation she had at hand, it costs $50/m, with mobile & 'toll calls' incurring a p/minute charge.

Also in there was a statement "you will not change the sim card in the modem"

Out of pure curiosity, what would happen if I were to pop a Skinny sim with a $17 prepay plan in?

She has a St John medical alarm too if that will have any bearing

She has tried a mobile phone, too confusing - fair enough.

Thanks for your time

A) Its likely that the wireless modem is locked to the provisioning provider, and

B) The voice service on the handset is likely coming via a VOIP number, so sticking in a SIM with unlimited calls doesn't actually impact on the handset dialling at all...

This won't work if she can do away with the landline and just use a mobile phone she can get Mobile/NZ/Australia for a very cheap price

The router uses VoIP.

Just a suggestion though - don't mess with it. It's easier to leave it be. We all know you can get better deals via other VoIP providers, using a mobile etc but elderly people just like landlines and just know landlines. My Nana has the same plan and it has been stable going on 5 years now still with the original router. If it works it's easier to leave it than stress them out teaching them a new technology.

St Johns alarm should have it's own sim card.

Agree fully, been there lol.

My hope (erm curiosity...) was that by changing the sim, her experience wouldn't change (except for the area code)

In saying that, the change of prefix would cause issue.  Something I hadn't thought of.  Thanks again
