Hi all,

Every promotion for broadband says it is valid when you get a year contract. But I couldn't find anything on Telecom's site that less than a year subscription is possible. Any of you know? I want to switch my ISP and considering telecom, but I will probably leave NZ in less that a year.

thanks

Consumer plans are only offered on a 12 month minimum contract. Business plans are on a 24month minimum term.

You would probably have to ask about just paying the full monthly price, and not getting the free modem

Not an option. 12 month minimum contract either way.

I also thougth that should be the case, since they say you get a free modem if you make 12 month contract. This implies you have the other option.

This may not be the rigth forum but is there an ISP with reasonable data prices, no shaping and no minimum contract requirement?

Xnet.

Anyhoo, I just got broadband on. Many may be surprised (or not) to know that after extensive research into options including naked DSL, (as I simply do not require a normal phone line at all), that I settled on Telecom/Xtra, phone went on on Monday (took about 3 hours from when I asked for a connection), and I believe the DSL is on now (Im out of town, so not 100% sure when it went on).

Telecom were quick and easy to deal with, very upfront with contract term and cancellation fees, and made it sooooo easy both in getting me the pricing and info, then an hour later when I called to take up their service.

Orcon was a non-starter with poor customer service, useless web signup, and a hold time that I gave up on when trying to phone.
Xnet seemed okay, but the guy on the phone was difficult to deal with.
None of the others really interested me enough to bother.

Given Telstraclears bold news today, I would have called them and strongly considered their options as a reward for leveraging their position in the marketplace to try and scuttle S92a. Thumbsup guys.

If you are a student you can sign up with Telecom at the moment for an 8 month contract.  Details at:

www.telecom.co.nz/studentbroadband

I'm guessing you have to supply some form of student id before you can sign up for this deal

Sing up for 12 month plan.  Get free modem.

  Sell modem.

Use proceeds to offset some or all of the $99 disconnection penalty when you leave within 12 months,

Not anymore, from the Xnet website

As of November 1 2008 there is a $99 disconnection fee if a customer cancels their service within the first 12 months. This fee reduces by $8.25 for each month your service is active with WorldxChange (ie: after 6 months the disconnection fee will be $49.50). When joining from another provider, a churn fee of $25 is applicable. Connection and Wiring costs $149 on top of a provisioning fee, and is where a technician will visit your house. A Connection and Wiring Cost is normally required where you have 4 or more phone jacks in use or a monitored alarm. All prices include GST.

I just saw an orcon advertisment at the bottom of the page of another thread on this website. They are currently promoting no contracts, no lock in and no disconnection fee.

I beleive they do have a connection fee of $99 though, unlike many other providers who give connection for free.
