I am using the Sierra Wireless watcher software with the telecom mobile broadband device on an Acer 6292 with 2 gigs memory, vista business and a standard setup. I also rum apple's mobile me to sync my iPhone, PC and laptop.

I am finding that for some reason thee connection is chewing up a huge amount of system resource with CPU usage regualrly sitting the 90% - 100% area and performance very slow. When not connected CPU usage is very low - less than 10% or.

I cannot see anything immediately obvious in the processes which are running that might be a problem

Anyone seen this problem??

You can right-click the taskbar then open the Task Manager. Switch to Processes and click the CPU heading to sort by CPU usage.

What is going through your CPU?

The last time I ran this setup for a client, I had no issue with the usage of RAM is usual, what AV do you run? when you control alt delete and see processes what is the one chewing it most?

You could always try using the device as a connection under network connections instead of using the watcher software.

We run the Sierra Wireless EVDO watcher on over 100 PCs (admittedly all Toshiba laptops running either XP or Vista) and I've never seen any issues with either the 6.x or the 7.x versions of the software, unlike the Cisco VPN software that we use in conjunction with it. It performs a pretty basic task and seems to do so pretty reliably.

Are you running any form of 3rd party firewall software?

Hello - and thank you to everyone for the suggestions...
I am running McAfee AV software - with all the appropriate firewall exceptions happening.
Ranking CPU use shows the following
svchost: 170k - 210 k.... it variessvchost: 65 kMcshield (the McAfee software I guess) 33kWatcher (the Sierra software) 14 kexplorer 13k
when not connected, we have
svchost: 65ksvchost 49kMcshield at 33k stillexplorer 21k
I am not too sure what those service host tasks actually do.... but the snarl up is presumably something to do with those.
