Press release:

Spark’s award-winning network coverage just got better, with Spark data and text satellite-to-mobile services, powered by Starlink, now available to help customers stay connected in some of Aotearoa’s most remote locations.

Customers on eligible plans[1] across Consumer, SME, and Enterprise will automatically have satellite data and text connectivity included at no additional cost. All other plans have satellite data and text available as an optional extra from $10, offering flexibility for those who want access to satellite services on an ad-hoc basis.

Spark’s Chief Commercial Officer Mark Beder says “Spark’s network has the widest coverage in New Zealand1, but we know New Zealanders love to explore the incredible landscapes of Aotearoa, and many New Zealand businesses have employees working in remote locations. During these times when our customers don’t have access to traditional mobile networks, our satellite service will help them to stay connected – provided they have line of sight to the sky.

“By including satellite data alongside texting, we’re supporting New Zealanders to stay connected in as many ways as possible, wherever life takes them. Data can be used on selected satellite-ready apps people already rely on – from calling or messaging through WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to using practical tools like AccuWeather, Plan my Walk, or Google Maps.”

At launch, Spark will include both data and text services across eligible plans. Text-only services will then be introduced as an inclusion across a wider range of plans in the future.

“We are thrilled to partner with Spark to expand access in New Zealand with Starlink Mobile. With 650 launched satellites, it’s the world’s largest and only satellite-to-mobile constellation powering data and messaging,” says Stephanie Bednarek, VP of Starlink Mobile Commercial Sales. “It’s delivering connectivity when people need it, whether that’s creating new memories on outdoor adventures or texting loved ones during critical moments.”

Spark Satellite requires an eligible phone, SIM, and plan. Depending on your device, you may need to update your SIM, install the latest software, or wait until satellite functionality is enabled. For more information, visit http://spark.co.nz/satellitetomobile

Spark website: Messages include text messages, iMessage and RCS.

When did Spark get RCS? That completely passed me by!

This is showing on my Devoli plan as well, it might have been enabled for all MVNO's. I'll need to check next time I'm somewhere with no reception.

The reference to RCS here applies to Android devices only.

Only some plans appear to be supported, with other ones appearing to require you to buy an addon to use it, so I've updated our group plans to the newer ones which worked out to be a tiny bit cheaper and have more endless data, not that we ever come close to using the allowance we had before anyway!

I guess Spark had to wait for their 3G shutdown in order to refarm some spectrum straight to Satellite. The question now - which band(s) is it operating on?

Looks like it is using b7 on the same frequency range as One NZ (on license from One NZ). Rather odd! Only ever seen something similar to that kind of arrangement with RCG, but even that's not quite the same as this.

Limited to specific models of iPhone and Samsung only - disappointing as I have neither.

Definitely being marketed as a "premium" offering to users of premium-priced handsets

Presumably more supported handsets will come later. Android devices will all need to be tested, possibly updated, etc.

The iPhones have the same support globally. I wouldn't call an iPhone 13 premium.

It's more than a cheap android still. People leaving civilization tend to trash devices pretty often so there needs to be cheap and rugged phones that can use this. Apple make neither, and nothing from samsung is ruggedized.

My S25 says it's available as well. Nice move. Unlikely to ever need it but reassuring to know it's available.

Much bigger list of eligible devices for data on Spark than One NZ, let's see how fast that changes
