telecom's network is not gsm..

unless it also does wcdma 850, you're outta luck unfortunately.

Yes it will as it does UMTS 850 and UMTS 2100. You can check by going into your menu/settings/connectivity/mobile networks/select network. Once there you will probably see Vodafone 2G and Vodafone 3G also Telecom and NZComms.

Like many handsets there are two different models of the G705. One does 850 UMTS the other doesn't.

No. There's Vodafone New Zealand, Telecom New Zealand and NZ Comms (not the final brand).

NZ Comms used to be known as Econet and will be announcing availability shortly.
