Some videos on YouTube of it in action. The interface certainly looks very slick. Iphone killer?

I'm not really sure to be honest.

I'd like to think my modified HTC Titan is an Iphone killer actually! :-)

But not yet released in WCDMA / GSM format, hence CDMA only....

Can CDMA phones be locked? Would it be possible to import a CDMA Pre and run it on Telecom CDMA or TelstraClear?

Nope. The Palm Pre was originally announced as a CDMA only device, for Sprint. After some time it was rumoured that a GSM/WCDMA version will come out (which is natural, Palm wouldn't want to miss that market), but as of now it's not even available for sale in either version.

As for if it will be on Telecom New Zealand... Wait until tomorrow (20th May) morning. I am flying up to Auckland to attend the Telecom XT Network media launch, where they will reveal the handsets, pricing, etc. I will post here on Geekzone as soon as possible.

I am lining up for it. US Rumour mill says it will be announced today (US time, so our tomorrow) on Sprint along with the pricing plans (coincidence that it is about the same time as XT announce??). Expectation is that it will be available late in the first week of June.

Telstra are supposedly picking it up in August; See http://www.smarthouse.com.au/Phones/Industry/T8W2F6B4?page=1

Europe GSM (which I think also means W-CDMA) release is in the 2nd half of the year, so it could be a while for us....

Who really knows...?

Calling something an "iProduct Killer" is such a cliche term.  The iPhone is not the largest selling smartphone in the world, so you must mean it's the best?  Bold claim.  What the iPhone offeres is not just because of the phone itself.  People forget about the end to end environment that Apple has built around its products that other companies usually just forget about.

So we finally got the subsidized price of the Palm Pre on Sprint today, $199.  If I could get it unlocked and moved to Telecom CDMA, It'd make a cool second phone (if it was less than $900 non contract in NZ).  I'm locked into the Apple environment you see...too many app purchases for me!

I doubt Telecom will have news before other, bigger "GSM" carriers get word about a "GSM" Pre.  There isn't anything wrong with their CDMA/EVDO network at the moment, the could probably get away with bringing a CDMA/EVDO Pre to their network and just branding it XT.  I'm not sure many consumers realise that XT = Sim.

I'd rather have Windows Mobile 6.5 on my Okta Touch, with cheap EVDO data. They did 6.1 eventually, I wish they'd just pump out 6.5.

There is so much they could do with their CDMA network once customers start moving to XT.

Back to the Pre.  It's an awesome phone, but it's still Sprint and CMDA exclusive...

This wouldn't be able to happen since Telecom don't allow foreign CDMA devices onto their network without a Telepermit, which is pretty tough to get.

IMHO the iPhone isn't a very good _phone_. It's most competent feature appears to be the web browser, all the other features are so slimmed down functionality-wise as to make them not significantly better than a fairly average non-smart phone. There's plenty of interesting downloadable apps for it, but in it's raw form I'm not terribly impressed. When the next version arrives with a final v3 firmware, it may be a different story. I regard the current firmware as woefully feature-incomplete (and the 1st gen iPhone seemed barely more than a beta). The interface and hardware design is quite good however.

It's likely to be the 3rd gen iPhone that the Pre may be competing against, not the current version & that could be a whole different game due to the much improved firmware (and incremental hardware). The fact that the touchstone charger is US$70 seems a tad steep considering it's just an induction charger is a shame as that could be a good selling point.
