I've tried synching 2 different phones (Nokia to Ovi & Zyb, SE to Zyb) and the received SMS message with the setup data is received as 2 or 3 messages, unrecognised by the phone(s) as setup data, just turning up as a bunch of mostly random characters with a few discernible addresses & logins in them.

Has anyone managed to get a remote service to send configuration data to their XT phone?

Edit:

Someone from Zyb contacted me out of the blue, apparently they've been keeping an eye on their logs, nice of them to offer to try and help seeing as how they could see I've sent several installs but haven't synched anything.

Just tried Ovi again, still getting gibberish text messages instead of setup data, anyone on XT had a go with this yet with success or otherwise?

I don't even get the text message from them when I tried.

Sounds like some sort of issue with the XT SMSR or the roaming hub choking on 8 bit SMS messages.

I might do some testing tonight and try sending some 8 bit binary SMS's from Vodafone to XT and see if they work, this could narrow the issue down to one affecting the SMSR or whether it's outside Telecom.

Have you got a ported in 021 number to Telecom?

I've just done some testing. Telecom's SMSC or SMSR that they have on their network is choking on 8 bit binary SMS messages that are received off network (ie from outside Telecom's network).

The configuration messages sent from Ovi and Zyb are sent as 8 bit binary SMS's - this is a regular SMS but uses 8 bit encoding and changes a flag to set the UDH type as a binary message. There are many other uses for 8 bit binary SMS's including WAP Push.

Telecom obviously have an issue somewhere with their network so it's up to them to fix it. There is nothing you can do yourself to get it working.

Would this apply to me? I have my 027 number with Vodafone.

Yes. It means you won't be able to correctly receive 8 bit binary SMS's.

How does that work? external providers send messages to the "027" SMSC, and if it's a ported number they pass it on to other network SMSC? what sort of agreement is in place there for charging?

(hard questions for anyone other than johnr or telecom equivalent I imagine...)

Yes that is what happens I have known about it for months and logged a job with ASC along time ago

After finding out a bit more info I don't see this issue being fixed any time soon.

People who are on XT will just need to be aware that XT does not support 8 bit binary messages sent from anywhere outside the XT SMSC.

This means using online services or a handset or device not on XT to send VoIP or phone configuration settings OTA (such as Ovi) will not work. You will have to manually configure your handset or do something creative like putting in a Vodafone SIM to enable the OTA settings to be received.

IMHO some big fail on Telecom's behalf..Most other networks in the world have no issues with this.
