Hello Everyone,

We are in Newmarket and our ISDN lines are having intermittent problems, and the cafe across the road has their EFTPOS line down, we contacted Telecom as they said it was a Auckland wide issue.

Just wondering how widespread this is? Whats the problem, it seems to be effecting ISDN/POTS so a switching issue?

Can't be that widespread as this is the first post on Geekzone and we have been having problems for abour 3 hours now...

from Orcons Twitter

Telecom voice network has problems with intermittent overloading. 111 calls may be unable to progress. Will affect non-Orcon+ customers.

don't see how that part can be true ... even if they are on orcon+ they are still going to have issues receiving and making calls from and to the effected telecom network.

Orcon + users have Orcon supplied POTs lines and can call mobiles and other carriers that don't go thru Telecom. Non Orcon + have a Telecom landline..

yes but majority of other users are on the telecom network meaning that altho their individual lines are operating normally there is still a large impact to the overall service as chances are whoever you are ringing or whoever is trying to ring you is on the telecom network as there is a much much higher number of customers on their network.

This was a PSTN (fixed network voice calling) issue. There may have been a couple of minutes of 111 loss but this is still looking unlikely. As part of the fault identification/resolution traffic restrictions needed to be put in place which is when people experienced overloading messages. All traffic restrictions were removed around 12:30.

Major Telecom fault hits Auckland, Northland
Updated 1:32PM Thursday Jun 04, 2009

Auckland and Northland have been hit by a major telecommunications fault.

It has affected landlines, the Eftpos payment system and some mobile phone calls to and from landlines north of the Bombay Hills.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts said the cause of the fault was not yet known, but technicians were working hard to restore full services.

He said the problem, which began around 11am, was intermittent - with some calls getting through without problem, while others were affected.

Eftpos New Zealand, a subsidiary of the ANZ National bank, and one of the country's two major electronic card processers has issued a release saying it was advising its merchant customers to "revert back to using manual vouchers until the issue is resolved."

It said it would continue to update its merchants via its 0800 phone number - 0800 eftpos (0800 338 767), "as and when additional information is made available."

Telecom cannot yet give an estimated time when the problem will be fixed.

Did it have any impact on Sky's ability to receive calls on 0800 759 759? I've been trying since yesterday and getting the 'Lines congested' message or busy tone. Tried from Orcon+ landline and Vodafone mobile.

Major phone fault now fixed, says Telecom
Updated 1:44PM Thursday Jun 04, 2009

Telecom says a major telecommunications fault that hit Auckland and Northland has now been fixed.

The problem affected landlines, the Eftpos payment system and some mobile phone calls to and from landlines north of the Bombay Hills.

Telecom spokesman Mark Watts said the cause of the fault was not yet known, but technicians were working hard to work out what had happened.

He said the problem, which lasted from 10.45am to 12.40pm, had been intermittent - with some calls getting through without problem, while others were affected.

Eftpos New Zealand, a subsidiary of the ANZ National bank, and one of the country's two major electronic card processers issued a release saying was advising its merchant customers to "revert back to using manual vouchers until the issue is resolved."

Expect more of these over the next few years until the NGN comes on line as most of the old NEAX exchanges are over 20 years old with very little spares.

Think of it as a 20 year old server with 20 year old hard disks running it..
