Anyone using the Nokia E71? WOuld like to get some comments on your experience with this phone as I'm in the process of choosing a phone, and this one looks the best for what I need.

Great phone, I actually copied scottjpalmer and bought one - never looked back.

I have one here. I really like the keyboard, and the GPS is really fast to get a fix. Not impressed with the email application though.

Very curious about this too. Trying to decide between an iPhone on XT or an E71. Looks like the 3GS isn't going to be here for a while, and I don't think its an overy compelling upgrade over the existing 3G. The thing that puts me off the iphone is the 'background' data usage, and the fact that it is not official on XT so I would need to get one from voda, do the sim swap and keep it hacked. The E71 is cheaper, browsing doesn't seem quite as good but it feels solid and I like the feel of the keyboard. Thoughts?

Love the phone. Mail for exchange is not great and editing documents on the phone difficult.... Still probably the best and most reliable phone I have ever had.

To complicate matters, I've had a play with the E75 at the Botany Telecom store and I quite like the size of the keys: I find them slightly bigger than the keys on the E71 which suits me (I seem to have a problem with most phones keypads: they don't seem to be geared towards, dare I say, the larger Occidental digits!!). For an extra $100, I've bitten the bullet and opted for it.

I have had a play with both E71 and E75. Not used either one a lot so can't speak for the pro/cons of the email software. however, I much prefer the look and feel of the E75

GPS is great and the email works exactly how I want it. (I use a POP3 email from my ISP - it tells me when a new message comes and a can chose to download it or not. If I do download it, it still stays on the server which is what I like.)

I know it may seem weird that I don't want the email to come off the server but that's what I like.

I still use a POP3 because I want all the emails to be downloaded to my computer once I get home. Hence IMAP on phone, POP3 for home.

Laugh all you like, works perfectly for me.

The idea is to sue something like IMAP so rather than email being "downloaded" to your computer or phone etc. all that happens is your access device synchronizes your local copy with that of the server. That means for example I could access emails for the last couple of years if I'm either at home, on the road with my phone or in a far off land via webmail.

It means that you aren't tethered to a single access method/location which is excellent if you aren't home but need urgent access to an email from a few months back. The best example of this at work is exchange....

Greekiwi: Your approach makes perfect sense to me. I use POP3 to download my email from GMAIL but I keep a copy of all mail on GMAIL as a backup and so that I can access mail whilst away from the desktop.

So, no laughing from here, the approach is more than sensible to my mind, you have a copy of the mail in two places - on the server and your local PC. From that point of view its a better approach than IMAP.
