So why does my Sanyo 6650 have a gps thingy in it?

There seems to be absolutely no use for it unless Telecom wants to track me ... and really, I'm not that interesting!

Google Maps Mobile? (www.google.com/gmm)

Which also includes Google Latitude, where you can share your location with your friends.

edit: I have no idea if the 6650 supports gmm... go there with the phone browser, and it'll tell you if it does/doesn't.

On most CDMA phones the GPS is not available to the user side of the phone, and is used for network-assisted services. I doubt Google Maps will work with that GPS.

You can just turn it off, or ignore it. Telecom doesn't do anything with that information.

Seems like a silly thing to have it the user can't use it!

But thanks for the replies guys

It's just something that it's on the handset - no way to remove it, so it just stays there. It's used in the U.S. but that's all...

Exposing your phone's location for 111 and the like, usually.  In USA they probably use it for such purposes as directing you to the local branch of Pizza Hut when you call the 800 number too.
