Hi GZers,

Am having some issues, wonder if anyone can give me some thoughts.

Bought me a spankin' new e75 on Wednesday last week, love it.

BUT...

Have been trying to use WirelessIRC and IM+ with disappointing results >< Would use mIRGGI but it crashes on e75 (yes, have submitted bug report).

WirelessIRC is affected the worst. It will disconnect after anything from a few minutes, to an hour-ish. IM+ seems to be less susceptible, but will also disconnect in a similar fashion - probably because it isn't checking the network connection as often). When either disconnects, the entire 3G data connection is lost, therefore SIP and anything else is disconnected also. Not sure if the 3g goes down, therefore apps die, or apps die, and bring down 3g with them.

I borrowed a friend's Vodafone SIM this morning, and tested for 3 hours, and neither dropped once. Put my XT sim back in and it dropped after 6 minutes, and thats after taking 5 minutes to register to the network.

Went into a TRS store and tried a storepersons SIM, same thing. Tried a fresh e75 and only installed WirelessIRC, same thing.

The only other phones i've tried these apps on are a N95 on Voda - worked perfectly, and a Nokia 6120 on XT - worked perfectly, but only tested for around an hour.

I'm convinced that its some issue either with XT, or with the compatibility between the e75 and XT.

Other than this, it is going well except for battery life when gmail is connected, but thats an issue for another day.

It would be useful if people could suggest ways I can further test.

A recap:

  • Disconnects after arbitrary time (few mins ~ an hour) on XT, even when in full 3.5G signal

  • Disconnects when sitting at desk, or walking around. Also once held a connection over a ~4km car drive

  • Disconnectes at my office, at the telecom store, in between, at the gym, at home, at a friend's house.

  • Doesn't (appear to) disconnect when not using IM+/WirelessIRC (but only other thing running is VoIP/SIP and occaisional web browsing, and i probably wouldn't notice unless i happened to look at the screen, and it hasn't dropped in the middle of a VoIP OTA call or web page load)

  • Worked flawlessly for 3 hours on Vodafone 3G

  • Same thing on another sim

  • Same thing on another e75

  • Same thing on wap/internet/direct.telecom.co.nz APNs.

  • Doesn't drop when at home using Wifi

From you good people, two things I would like:

  1. Suggestions of methods/apps to test further (network analysis tool? data monitor tool?)

  2. Info from people who have had similar experiences, or could possibly download those apps and similar apps to test, preferably on s60 v3 devices.

(Yes, I have been in contact with Telecom, and had the above info passed on to the XT people, so dont be trolling me with a "call the helpdesk" and Nate, if you mention honours then I will buy all the KFCs in the country and burn them to the ground ;-P (sorry, inside joke)).

Thanks,
Mushi

Try setting settings, phone settings, connection, packet data, packet data connection. and try changing it to "when needed".

Actually, I've just noticed that SIP has also been dropping out this evening (SIP is set to always registered).

Have learnt a bit more:

- When the data connection drops, I cannot call the phone immediately afterwards - it goes straight to Voice mail.

- Sbiddle (thanks Steve) suggests its to do with a UE Sleep command being sent over the Paging channel (PCCH) which is causing the disconnects. Whether this is a problem with XT itself, or a problem with the way the e75 is handling the command, we're not sure.

- Also, I notice that the XT customised firmware for e75 is one release behind the latest generic firmware - XT e75 is 100.47.78 (.505.03), while latest generic firmware released earlier in June is 110.48.125.

Hmm this is interesting I too have the E75. I have not used any apps that are sensitive to drops although I have noticed that GMail seems to disconnect occasionally.

My issues have more been call related. I have had 3 or 4 calls dropped since I have had the phone. In all but one of those cases I could receive make a call directly afterwards however the last one I dropped and then had the second issue as below.

A couple of times the phone has seemed to kind of drop off the network. I will go though the menus fine and I can tell it to make a call but if I do it does not connect. I just get silence on the line and it does not ring at the other end. If people try to call me it goes to voice mail.
The first time this happened I turned off the phone turned it back on at it was away. The second time I put the phone into “flight” mode and back to normal and it was then fine. However the odd thing was that the way I found it was playing up was that I got a message to say I had voice mail. However of course I could not call the voice mail.
However the third time it happened when I was on a call putting it in flight mode and back did not fix it the first time. Had to do it twice then it came back.

I am wondering if it is firmware related. I too noticed that we are a version behind. Seems that Telecom are not releasing the newer firmware although I have read some negative comments on it. One of the things is that apparently it removes the tap to silence and turnover to silence although I found the tap to silence did not work correctly anyway.

Ok I just had that same problem right now - wasn't doing anything with the phone, and suddenly got a voice mail.

Anyone else on Geekzone that has a E75 that can comment? Or I guess a different model if they are having the same issue?

Changed the thread name to reflect that its not just a data connection issue.

If you want to replicate the fault try using IRC or an IM app (see above) and see if they drop out after a short period (particularly a short period of inactivity) and as soon as they drop out try calling your phone from another phone - it should go straight to voicemail/busy signal.

I also have an E75, and to be honest I've never seen this issue. Although, I see pretty much what you're describing on my Vodafone N70.

I finally have fibre!  Had to leave the country to get it though.

You have the e75 on Vodafone or Telecom XT?

Are you living around East Tamaki / Flat Bush area?

I am using XT has a substitute broadband connection since I can't get DSL where I live at the moment and it has been a pretty inconsistent service. Some days I just can't use XT at all. The connection is maintained but no data packets are received, while datapackets being sent are constantly going up while its attempting to get a response.

My Sierra 885 was recently just replaced because it was faulty (constantly fails to detect simcard, connection issues). Telegistics, telecom's repair service also confirmed both issues during their own testing.

However, the new replacement SW 885 still constantly has connection issues. So I'm sure XT has some serious network issues that need to be sorted out.

I'm a little suprised there hasn't been more noise about these issues, but I suppose 1. many people don't rely on 3g broadband 2. maybe the problem is worse in my area and it works fine elsewhere in the country.

I've only seen this issue on the e75, however if sbiddle is right in it being a UE sleep issue, it could possibly affect other devices that can't/don't handle it as intended.

Telecom.  I can't justify Vodafone's $300 markup over Telecom for the phone.
