Has anyone found a way to speed up you tube loading on the bigtime plan?

Ensure you are using Telecom DNS servers and not those from an old ISP or opendns etc... The reason for this is that I have observed if you use non-Telecom DNS servers, the video servers you connect to are in the US, and are about 250ms away, while using the Telecom DNS servers connects you to a video server within NZ and about 50ms away. (50ms for me, in Chch, on an interleaved line).

I'm not sure whether that would completely solve any problems you would be having, but it's obviously going to be better to speak to a local server.

Cheers - N

Open a command prompt (Start/Run - then type "cmd" without the quotes and hit enter... This should open a black command prompt...

At that, type (again without quotes) "tracert v4.lscache7.googlevideo.com"

If the output is about 8 hops, and a time of about 40-60ms, then you are looking at the NZ based servers

If it's above about 12 hops, and over 200ms, you're likely looking at the US servers

Try it and paste the output here.

Hmm. both you guys are routing to the NZ servers - I can't explain the high times for Wills1 unless you were downloading stuff at the same time.

I'm also not sure what's happening with the name resolution of the first hops...

iprolink.co.nz is Compass. What's going on there?

Something's odd... I don't believe there's ANY chance that a tracert would show the same exact latencies to each hop on subsequent runs, especially with those numbers (which I can't even understand!)

What is your router, and how long have you been on the bigtime plan? Could you also try a tracert to

tracert www.telecom.co.nz please.

Cheers - N

I've been on Big Time plan since 3rd July. Was on Adventure prior to the change.
Never had any problems until the change to big time

On another note, I'll be checking that I'm using the correct DNS servers in my modem settings. Just by chance I checked them last night and discovered two big red "X" icons where there should be two big green "tick" signs. No idea how or why they aren't ticks. More info to follow :D
