Using bt and big time appears to 'cripple' my connection to around 200KB/s. All traffic gets affected. If turn bt off, I can sustain 'full speed' of about 1MB/s all day all the time. I don't know about other p2p networks, but I would expect similar behaviour to that of bt traffic.

I've definitely pulled down more data on big than I have on go large. But I don't use p2p often.

My feeling is bt on big time means slow internet for everything else (youtube, http etc).

I feel good.

Im sorry, but what is your question exactly? Are you complaining about an unlimited plan, that limits your illegal downloads?

Ummm we all know that bittorrent isn't illegal, invalid assumption mate.

Anyway I came on here looking for the same thing - i'm curious to know how BigTime performs, not just in the P2P arena. e.g. will large FTP / HTTP downloads also result in throttling, and what kind of speed are we talking about?

Just moved to Big time from Pro, Youtube is just a bit better at 10am, still cannot view HD Youtubes, my P2P has been hammered down, could get 50kBs on Pro now less then 10kBs.
I guess I will find a proxy server out of NZ to use. So now I will test from 4PM to 11PM I expect the wheels to really fall off.

rscole86, didn't you know? EVERYONE only ever uses BT for downloading "Linux Distros"!

I don't know anybody who has ever used Bit torrent to download any illegal software or videos.

Apart from everyone who has it.

The same can be said of the internet in general. I guess the internet is just for pirates. Alright everyone, off the boat - this "internet" thing has no valid uses.

Hint: many companies are experimenting with streaming video over P2P, distribution of game demos, patches (see: WoW), etc. P2P is a far superior content distribution method than client/server for many many high bandwidth applications.

Hahahah what are you, high or something? Thats like saying sports cars are only used to drive fast, and therefore ALL vehicles are ONLY used for racing purposes!

I am still waiting to meet someone that uses P2P to download the same Linux ISO image every day, twenty times a day.

Seriously, everyone knows that P2P is very efficient and can be used for legal software and content distribution. Everyone also knows that P2P is mostly used for illegal download of copyrighted material. If you deny this then you just look dumb.

Back to the topic at hand how is Big Time for general http and streaming video? I'm on telstaclear which is good but I'm burning my monthly 20gb limit each month so Big Time seems a nice alternative.

My understanding is that the Big Time plan only throttles and P2P traffic.

HTTP traffic etc etc remains unaffected. However...

"When the network is busy (generally inside the hours of 9am and 2am) you may notice reduced speeds, in particular you are likely to see reduced speeds in relation to file sharing traffic"  (quote)

Capping / throttling broadband simply because it can be used to download illegal content makes about as much sense as restricting sales of blank cds to one per customer per month because they can be used to copy music. While we're at it lets cut back on legit music cd production because its impacting on sales of sheet music. I'm glad some of you are happy with throttling and caps, i'm sure your ISP loves you, but there are others out there who would like uncapped and REASONABLY throttled plans, and I believe the purpose of this thread was to find out if BigTime provides this, not slag its target market because they must be a bunch of filthy pirates. Anyway enough ranting...

Can anyone on here with BigTime perhaps post some speedtest results?

pab - your experience almost sounds too good to be true! I rarely get 200KB as it is unless i'm downloading popular pirated movies off bittorrent with over 1,000 sources (sorry couldn't help myself). If this is what you're capped to I think I could live with that!

You got it all wrong.

Telecom is not throttling broadband on Big Time because it can be used to download illegal material.

Telecom is throttling broadband on Big Time plan because it's the only way they can manage the increased consumption of bandwidth that comes with using this kind of technology. Bandwidth is limited you know?

Rscole's comment was sarcastic as in "are you complaining about the speeds on downloading content - that we presume is illegal downloads of copyrighted material?". This sounded to me more like "hey you are downloading something illegal and complaining at the same time?"
