What is wrong with my connection? I can't game on any U.S Servers. Worst Service I've ever had in 7-8 years gaming!

I'm on big time with interleaving turned off. My packet loss of 70% at hop 12 is very concerning. I have to disconnect from U.S servers because its impossible to play with the latency or packet loss. My ping is good but this makes no difference as it jumps around. These speeds are not what I call ADSL2+ and certainly not what I want to pay for. I never had these problems 2 years ago...what has changed?

I've confronted them in the past when Go Large was 'it' as to why international packet loss can be ~50% (its nothing new)

The answer was 'it was never designed for streaming media etc as per documented'

It's one of their many ways of filtering international speeds. Do the same to a national sever, it will go via a different set of routers and not have the loss.

Go large/Big time are ultimately the same thing now, with the exception of the 128kbps up as apposed to FS they have the same filtering/shaping etc. You have just answered a question many have wondered, is gaming effected (especially international).. answer.. yes. Infact I suspect all but FTP/SSH/VPN/HTTP are.

As for whats changed?.. you are now in a fully filtered/shaped connection on a limited rate pool as apposed to one with no filtering but a limited amount of traffic allowed.

You will almost never get full adsl2+ sync as a DL rate on these plans (or normal ones for that matter), especially from international links. So to say its not what you want to pay for is somewhat.. a bit of a stretch. There's still ATM peering links and traffic exchange to be paid for, of which you would most certaily have to pay a crapstick more than $60 a month to get gauranteed.

Which is more or less why they can shape it how they please. Gotta make a profit somehow with prices as low as they are.

If you are perferring gaming to downloading and web browsing, it might be an idea to shift back to a data capepd plan with less filtering.

I had this same problem when on Telecoms Adventure plan! In fact ever since my ADSL2+ cabinet (300m away) was installed I've found it almost impossible to play on U.S Servers. I never had the problems I have now with ADSL1 from the exchange 3.5kms away. So why am I getting the worst international gaming service I've ever had in 7-8 years gaming on the same server in Chicago. My local speeds are fine and my line is fine. If I can't get the service I pay and use it for (International Gaming)...I may as well close my Telecom Home Phone, Tolls and Broadband account. Which I'm now seriously considering.

Just an FYI. The telecom website does state that due to unlimited data allowance on this plan (Big Time), they will be doing traffic shaping in order to keep everyone on this plan optimised. I think they are doing what Orcon did to me some years back. They also had a flat rate plan and then all of a sudden it became impossibe to use. I queried them over and over again, but to no avail. I was given excuses from "Oh its the school holidays, so we expect lots of kids on the internet" to "I think your exchange is being upgraded but since we are not Telecom, we do not have any visibility on this or when it will be done". Finally I did some digging of my own and found that they had basically pooled all the flat rate users into one pipe with a limited bandwith. So if one person abused their usage, others suffered. I later moved on to one of their premium plans.

Long story short, in my opinion, if you opt to use a flat rate plan, then you have already paid all that you could to the ISP and they cannot get any more money off you. Yet if you go onto a plan where they can make more money or are paying premium rates, they will tailor their services towards you more so that you are satisfied with their service and thereby use more and bring in more money for them. A comparable example will be KiwiOnline from the dialup days. You could pay 9.95/month and get that crappy service where there is hardly any customer support and you would be lucky to get connected. Or you could pay 14.95 with slingshot and be guaranteed a connection all the time.

Just my 2c worth ... actually 10c since there are no longer any 2c coins in NZ :)

Thanks nivleshc,
What really pieces me off! Is for 7-8 years I've had no problem whatsoever gaming in the U.S now its next to impossible...WHY? I'm paying more money and supposed to be getting better service after upgrading to ADSL2+. I was getting 3000kb/s download on ADSL1 now I'm getting less(not that this is the main problem). Latency/Packet Loss possibly by the way traffic is shaped and routed is my problem. Just one question guys.... If my ADSL2+ cabinet has say 350 broadband customers on it...Will this give reduced performance compared to the one around the corner that has only 20 customers on it?

Mate they told you why your service is slower, its not because of the exchange or the cabinent, but the plan your on... for your gaming move onto a normal plan and I bet your problems (lag, latency, packet loss) will disappear.

I know people playing world of warcraft on big time without any major problems on US hosted servers.  Perhaps it's just a routing issue to those particular servers.

The hop 12 packet loss is fine - you'll notice there is zero packet loss at hop 13.  All it means is that hop 12 is not responding to ICMP particularly well (most likely because it has a control-plane policer on it); but that it is not impacting forwarded traffic.

You should try doing a traceroute from your PC to the game server, not the other way around.  This would be somewhat more enlightening.

And, as others have pointed out, if you are on BigTime you can expect to see higher latency and packet loss as it is a traffic managed service.

It is a problem with mdr-fid-int.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz, many people have reported the problem with high latnecy when their return route goes via mdr-fid-int.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz

Presumably it will be fixed at some stage.

The temporary solution is too reboot your router till you get assigned an ip address that uses their other main interface: GLF-FID.INT.tkbr10.global-gateway.net.nz.

A tracert from an overseas server to your ip address is the best way to tell whether you are on a range going via the good or the bad interface.  A tracert from your address to the game server won't tell you anything interesting as the problem is with mdr-fid-int.akbr5.global-gateway.net.nz
