I was just wondering if it would be possible to port my current number and get a new number put onto my XT sim?

As far as I am aware a SIM can only be used on one number for it's entire life. So unfortunately it looks like buying a new sim.

Telecom allows you to re-use a SIM unlike other carriers. However I have to ask, why do you want to do this?

I want to switch to 2degrees (which I know will port my number over to my sim) when I run out of credit, because it works out cheaper for my low usage. However I figure theres no point in wasting a sim that new would cost $30, I could flick it off on trade me or something.

I got my sim free with an upgrade from the CDMA network owing to a busted handset. Had it been a month or 2 later I would have ported straight to 2D at it's launch.
