Hey Guys I have been doing tracerts and this does not look good? What could be my problem? Faulty Modem? Faulty Something? Bad Latency MS?

Have you unplugged all the phones in your house?
Checked line filters?

Not recently John...This has been an ongoing problem for about 9 months. So far it's cost me a fortune trying to eliminate my latency gaming issues. I have an old Dynalink 4 port RTA 1335 modem running through a filter which also has the phone plugged into it. This is the only phone in the house plugged in. We have two other phone jack points but don't use them. Speedtests all seem normal and my line rate is good.

Baz

If I'm seeing those numbers right (and I changed the screen res to make sure - have to at my age ) it would seem to be suggesting a hop time of nearly 50 days to get as far as your router ! Which could explain your comment about taking 9mths to figure this out. Those numbers are just invalid

Suggest you worry less about latency on your Internet connection for now & figure out what's wrong with your OS (which given you say "tracert" is Windows) - quick google threw up this http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/showthread.php?p=24203 - might be worth a look?

But for the moment I can stop worrying about >300ms delays to Europe

cheers!

Sorry folks, composed that reply in "quick" window so ugly layout and no Surprised as first comment !

fwiw here is a sensible "tracert" to telecom:

Tracing route to telecom.co.nz [146.171.18.242]

over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     1 ms    <1 ms     1 ms  192.168.1.1

  2    15 ms    13 ms    12 ms  x-x-x-x.broadband.telstraclear.net [x.x.x.x]

  3    21 ms    20 ms    20 ms  ge-2-0-0-906.ie2.telstraclear.net [203.98.18.65]

  4    21 ms    20 ms    20 ms  ggis-gige-v906.telstraclear.net [203.98.18.67]

  5    21 ms    20 ms    20 ms  g0-1-0-4.akcr8.global-gateway.net.nz [210.55.202.49]

  6    21 ms    22 ms    20 ms  xtra-mta-dom.akcr8.global-gateway.net.nz [203.96.65.198]

  7    22 ms    21 ms    20 ms  146.171.18.210

  8    21 ms    22 ms    22 ms  146.171.18.242

Trace complete.

(my IP replaced with x's - paranoia)

If you are getting such "silly" traceroute numbers, likely that cause could be causing performance issues that are not ISP related at all

Hey Baz

Those numbers had me intrigued so did a bit more digging and came up with this  which looks very like your problem - except your Dynalink doesn't appear to be a wireless router? But removing the interfering RF source seemed to fix it.

Can you plug a spare machine (ok I know not everyone has a heap of spare PCs kicking around) into your router & repeat the trace? That would nail it to being machine-specific.

Otherwise most other references to these inflated apparent delays all seem to be "gamer" related so wondering (not being a gamer) if something unwanted is being applied to your OS when the game s/w is installed?

Well it's a diversion from my own broken checksum problem...

 cheers!

Hey Thanks guys...I will check out all your suggestions. Maybe it is something installed on my machine? Service Packs? Software?

Hey Soleil thanks for your help...I actually bought a second PC a few months ago because of this but getting the same problems. Is it software I'm installing? Drivers? Now this has me thinking also...Bluetooth!!! Problems actually could have started when I got my Playstation 3 this has bluetooth i.e remote control. I have my playstation 3 plugged into my router but it is only ever used for updates and is hardly ever on. I tried PC gaming with the PS3 internet cable unplugged from my router but seems to make no difference to performance. Another potential problem maybe my Ethernet Driver? Geez I've been pulling my hair out and so frustrated since Xmas/New Year and this is the best help I've received. Thanks guys. I've been gaming for 7 years plus with little or no problems until now. When I get home from work tonight what should I try to do first? Throw the PS3 and its bluetooth remote over the neighbours fence?

Baz
The numbers just looked so unreal; if you were say getting a 600ms hop somewhere out beyond your network then yes it would indicate maybe an overloaded link which would cause latency. But I would suggest you can't really look at that until you get some sensible numbers from a tracert. Even then there's a limit on what you could do about it - that's the nature of the Internet ! If that poor hop is identifiable as within your ISPs network then you can at least complain to them ! But you say your speedtests and linespeeds are coming up ok so it's likely any delays are outside your ISPs control anyway.

johnr's first response asking about isolation tests is the way to go, i.e. to identify exactly where the problem might be.

You say your 2nd PC is behaving the same. Does that mean you are getting these crazy tracert numbers or your gaming is running slow/dropping connections? If both PCs return the same sort of tracert numbers then you can rule it out being machine specific (e.g. a faulty network card). However, if both machines use the same model of network card you can't rule out a driver problem; and if you have the same s/w installed across both machines then that software could be a common issue.

Given the bluetooth reference in the external post I referred to, you could try switching off the PS and its BT and then trying a tracert with just one PC powered & nothing else connected to the router and see what results you get? That's a first step in isolating the problem. But my understanding of that posting was that Bluetooth (or another RF source) was interfering with wireless network connectivity.

Out of interest (if I get a spare 1/2 hour) I'll configure up BT on my laptop, connect a phone and see what (if anything ) it does...

One other thing is that your router has its hostname resolved - I need to have a think about where that name resolution is happening (certainly not on your regular DNS servers) and if a suspect host entry might be causing wayward data.

cheers!
