Hey all, just reposting to bring the answer to the top for those looking.

"We are constantly reviewing traffic management, so as to optimise the experience for our valued Big Time customers.

While our traffic shaping is working well, we are looking into minor routing issues with Big Time that may be affecting a small number of users. In line with our monitoring of Big Time, we will be making changes over the next 2 weeks, we do expect those few users with latency issues to see an improvement.

Thank you for your patience."

Sounds like they'll be fixing it within 2 weeks, lets hope that solves it for all of us!

Ping times totally suck here. exceeding 400ms 6pm - late.
Ive contacted Telecom everyday and whinged, they are getting heaps of complaints reguarding this issue.
Theyve put me onto the Adventure Plan to compare the difference... Of course theres gonna be a difference... duh.

Have you got a SLA contract with Telecom on ping times?

The problem didn't exist before the middle of August for customers routed via one of their edge routers and before the middle of September for customers routed via the other edge router.

The speculation is that they run their traffic management hardware off these routers and in peak time under load the traffic management process is causing a increase in latency on ALL traffic for Big Time users.

It has been suggested they possible causes of the problem could be:
- There isn't enough bandwidth between the routers and the management appliances to handle the peak time load
- Badly configured rule that doesn't behave well under peak time load
- They simply don't have enough traffic management hardware to keep up with the peak time load while maintaining regular latency.

30ms vs 300-500ms through those routers for all traffic internationally is a big difference, I don't think they consider that normal operation.

It will undoubtedly take them some time to determine the best way to resolve the problem without creating other problems.

In the meantime if gaming internationally is more important to you than unlimited data, change back to Adventure until they fix it.

From memory it's a CIR of 32kbps, downtime of 4 days a year, and 1 second pings?

But it's been a while since I read the Telecom wholesaler :)

To be fair, my Big Time is a bit sluglish, but I am being leechy with it, and opened it up for all the other apartments to use. Mmmmmmm Free wireless, I am praised throughout the land, or small apartment complex, for my fine free wireless giving abilities.

FYI: The latency issue during peak time was seemingly fixed at the start of the week, lots of people reporting normal pings now on gaming forums to Australian and the US from 6pm-11pm.

This certainly hasn't been fixed for me.  My particular problem is Warcraft latency making the game unplayable.  I too have been in touch with Telecom and had a response saying the problem was being worked on.  The timeframe they gave me isn't up yet, so there is hope yet.  My problem isn't just with peak times either, it's constant.  I've logged in many times over the course of today, starting about 11 am, and up to and including now which is nearly 9pm, I get latency ranging from 5000 - 12000.  It's been like this for about three, maybe four weeks now.  I appreciate Telecom are working on this, but I really hope it is sorted soon.  For all those who no longer have this problem, you're very, very lucky.

There was never a problem with local latency for most people.  Is this a new problem?  What local server are you trying to use, who hosts it?

Also I don't play Wow anymore so I have no idea what performance for it is like on Big Time.

What do tracerts show for you guys to the servers ip address?

This sounds like it may be a different problem with similar symptoms, I have not read all the posts in this thread, but others are saying local latency should be fine so you should be able to hit the first gateway on a traceroute without huge latency, or get normal latency during times of the day.

May be a router or seperate DSL issue (cabling etc.)

Try pinging the next hop in your traceroute, for example I'm on BT and this is a traceroute to Clear's DNS

Tracing route to 203.97.33.1 over a maximum of 30 hops

This is my tracert to the warcraft login server, I find it quite difficult to analyse though.  Does it show anything unusual?

Apparently the warcraft servers don't respond to this which is why there is nothing after 15.  I have found the problem goes away around 9pm at night, but I don't know what time it starts again - latency is rubbish by morning anyway.  I have tried a different router too, with no improvement.

That doesn't show anything unusual 180-200 ms response time is normal for US servers from NZ.

Do you just connect directly to wow or do you use a SSH tunnel service like Lower Ping, Smooth Ping, Wow Tunnels?
