Thinking of moving to big time after seeing how much better it is then my slingshot connection when torrents are not using their cache.

Anyway, I dont want to buy a piece of 100 year old technology analog phone service as well, so are there any plans for telecom to offer big time as a naked product?

No idea, but if they dont I recommend XNet. I'm not usually awake to worry about the whole 2am-8am slowdown, and the downloads I normally schedule all finish with pretty good speeds. The rest of the time I never have any problems either. Plus if you can keep your on-peak use to a minimum (i.e. at work most of the day and dont download tons of stuff when you get home) you can get away with only spending $1-$2 a month on traffic.

I doubt it, it makes no financial sense for them.  Removing the restriction for having a phone line with ADSL, removes you giving them more $$ for a phone line.

I don't think we'll see Telecom with naked DSL for a long time yet.

I wouldn't count on Telecom offering it. I believe that they make a lot of money from people who only make a few calls per month. I'm with TelstraClear and make zero calls; I use my cellphone when I do need to call someone. I've thought about changing ISP but I'm concerned about my latency increasing (I play online games). TelstraClear is therefore getting a "free" $45/month out of me!

Yeah, after seeing mums xnet connection and my aunts one which I recommended in action trying to play youtube HD or even HQ, I will not go near them.

My flatmate is on a xnet connection and even at peak times I can get a torrent done before him, even when the slingshot cache doesnt deliver it. I just dont fint 40-50kB/sec acceptable for most of the day on non cacheable torrents, when a big time connection will deliver that or more, without usage issues.

They have a vested interest in the analog phone system so they won't be offering naked dsl plans and voip any time soon. Just doesn't make business sense.

Switched from Telecom recently because of this.

I was on a Telecom total Home Package with 10G, and unlimited calls in NZ for $106pm

Now I have switched to Snap, $69pm, plus I get a static IP, extra 1G datablocks are just $2, and with my slingshot VOIP phone (number ported from Telecom), I can call nearly anywhere in the world all for $10pm, 500minutes included. Mobile rates in NZ are even far cheaper.

The sooner Telecom realizes they shooting themselves in the foot here the better. I would definitely have changed my plan to a Nake DSL with Telecom if they had it.

Yes, they are, but for some reason they value a featureless analog landline at over $40 a month, when that much on a mobile gets so much more.

I would have thought they would be pushing a combo deal with fixed internet and a mobile with a homezone type service - even vodafone arent doing that and they already have the homezone which for some insane reason they want to bill separate from their internet services (no naked vodafone options either which sucks)

Doesn't make technical sense either, bring the price down for sure to VOIP pricing, but don't stop supplying emergency power for our voice network.

The linecards for the nodes can do POTS/VDSL2 now, so why move away from such a simple powerful reliable technology with such wide adoption and mass of existing compatiable gear available?

I'm not saying there won't be a place for VOIP, but for homes, and basic services keep POTS around. Until VOIP is as reliable and the emergency power problem is solved I don't want to see mass adoption. Would VOIP cope well in a earthquake or major flooding with power outages? At least you can still call for help.

SAVE OUR POTS!

If I was to use pots, I would need to get a lxo for my asterisk box that doesnt sound like crap, that has proven very very problematic with both the cheap intel modem, a digium clone and a sipura all having unacceptable echo or one way speach if I messed with the echo cancelling, sip just works and works fine unless I am thrashing the connection with 100s of torrent peers.

IMO there should be a choice. I am not expecting telecom to offer voip, just not offer the analog phone because in a flat, its usually not used since everyone has mobiles and it has a tollbar on the phone to stop people using it and not owning up, so about all it gets used for is the odd local call which prices the local calls at about $5 each if you splitthe cost of the analog line between all that are made.

What;s the VoiP quality like?   Do you get many dropped calls? Crackling on the line etc?
most people say that VoiP is not as good as standard PSTN but I'm curious as to whether the differece is actually noticable

Its better IMO - so long as the connection is up to it. If I limit utorrent to 20-30 connections it has no effect on the voip.

If setup correctly it works just as well as PSTN. We use DVX (WorldxChange) at the office on a daily basis and have never had anyone mention poor call quality.

Using the new wideband codec (G711), it's like HD voice (I think only the Polycom's support it at the moment) and sounds fantastic. Unfortunately you have to support it on both sides (it doesn't work VoIP to POTS or vice versa).

You can call me if you want and I'll demo what the call quality is like :)

Interesting thread.  I spoke to a manager in Telecom yesterday about this.  No idea how high up the food chain he was but he did tell me that Telecom are "thinking" about Naked DSL.  Though he did say he had no idea when / if it would come but said there is a lot of people been asking for this.

At home I have not had a phone line for over 5 years.  There are two of us.  We both have work cellphone plus we have got one personal prepay phone as well.  Our situation could never justify any need for a home phone line.

We are finding the majority of our friends are similar.  Their comms are via cellphone and no one has land lines. (I am 40yrs BTW so have have had plenty of working life)

If Telecom offered Naked DSL I would sign up tomorrow(as long as they did not make it a stupid price) from my current ISP(Woosh).  Maybe my circle of friend is unique but Telecom could gain a whole bunch of new customers with such an offering.  i.e. the customers that would have no need at all for a analog home phone.

The quality of VoIP is identical or better than PSTN depending on the codec you use.

You mean G.722

There is also the newer G.722.1C super wide band that delivers an even greater frequency range.
