Finally, officially, Mobile Broadband roaming to Oz is available.
EVDO in all cities apparently, and 80kbps 1x in the regions.
Call Telecom roaming before you go to confirm you are set up.

Actually 1x roaming has been on since 2003 (unbilled). EVDO and the billing is what is new.

Unbilled roaming has also been unsupported roaming. You cant tell someone "yes you can roam" in case they have difficulties - the official word was "no, no roaming..."

Not sure on cost - I phoned the roaming helpdesk (0800492120) and waited on hold for 14 minutes before giving up. Why oh why cant they tell us how long the queue is when we ring??

Whatever Disenchanted.... a lot of corporates have been using 1x roaming for over a year with no issues. All data devices by default have been loaded with a PRL supporting Telstra CDMA since 2002.

im not disputing that, but no ones been able to go to a customer and proactively offer them data roaming unless they were prepared to run the risk of dealing with the fallout should the service have not worked.

Telecom were not providing its partners with information or support for it - but now they are.

Nope, not necessarily. Telecom have lots of services that are not priced on the website for various reasons.

OK - fair enough and it is good to finally be (or soon to be) official and a good move waiting to provide EVDO as well. So you all know mobile@jamamobile password: telecom works in Aussie. No need to change username/password.

It goes well. I was getting averages of 105kbps on 1x in Bundaberg a couple of weeks ago. Haven't personally tried EVDO myself but I have it on good authority that it is slightly slower than what we get here. For the record some testing last week in Aus on '3' produced continual averages of 220kbps (UMTS).

But how much for the EV-DO/1X roaming?

It is very annoying that almost no operators offer pre-paid mobile data, in fact Vodafone NZ is one of the very few - I don't know of any others. What I mean is Pre-pay connections that provide unregulated internet access - most Pre-pay connections globally only permit access to walled garden WAP type services.

If you know of any others, what is the operator, how much per MB, and what is the APN? We could compile a very useful list here to be maintained on Geekzone.

I have a huge list of APN's including a pile which most prividers will never tell you.
None for Prepaid though (apart from my one sim card which miracle'y "worked" and didn't charge a cent!)

Yes the Telecom "free" roaming was fantastic. I luckily got free roaming on Telecom AND Voda there :-) I was a very happy Chappy, those 2 Poor poor PDA's. at least my 1GB card was well used.

Yet another example of TNZ providing a free service because they didnt have the capability to bill it all figured out. :-) Smart way of doing it. Customers have effectively tested the system long term, now Telecom can launch it, and know what to expect.
