The HTC Harrier uses the EVDO network.

I am not aware of the 160c/a890/6265 coming anytime soon.

Nope, this is not correct. Telecom NZ offers data cards and the Harrier Pocket PC Phone Edition for example. I am not sure about mobile phone models, but the Harrier is a good showcase - I get averages of 500-600kbps, with peaks of 1Mbps (maximum of 2Mbps).

It is not a ploy... Compare this to Vodafone UMTS network that gets averages of 200kbps with maximum of 384kbps. Also, CDMA 1xRTT by itself is already much faster than GPRS, with some averages of 90-100kbps, so even the older mobile phones on Telecom would get a good throughput for dowloads.

But back on topic, since we don't want this thread to become a "this network or that network".

Yes, it is 3G, according to the ITU. Actually under certain conditions even CDMA 1xRTT was considered 3G. However I am more conservative and would consider 3G anything with speeds of 384kbps and up.

It is my understanding that T3G is telecoms name for its services such as video messaging etc. Which is quite misleading as the only places in the country that have true 3G, 1xEV is Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin airport

1xRTT has generally been considered 2.75G

For a good overview of 3G in all its forms go to

The trouble is, when people say something often enough, it can become gospel (even if wrong).

The Commerce Comission, carriers, media, and other individuals dont define what 3G is. That job has already been taken.

taniwha: this leaves the question: What is T3G? is it 3G or not?

Yup - T3G is Telecoms brand name for a collection of services which operate both on its 3G EVDO system (Mobile Broadband + more services to come), and on its 3G 1XRTT system (video messaging, P2T, etc etc.)

There seems to be lots of debate about whats 3G and whats not, but they have built a nationwide network that conforms to 3G standards, so I guess they are more than justified in using a 3G centric brand name to describe those services.

That's a strange number to choose..... why not a round number like 300 or 400?

but what a conincidence! that's the speed of voda's new 3G! Looks like they only just sneaked in enough speed.

(tounge firmly in cheek)

Again, for the 50,000,000 time CDMA 2000 1xRTT is 3G.

Back on topic... why would you want or need an EVDO phone when EVDO does data only not voice/data?

No - I wont give up. People need to understand there is no such thing as 2.75 or 2.99G. It is 2G, 3G and soon 4G.
