Hello
I am new to telecom.  I was connected this Tuesday and I have got one of the free Thomson wireless devices on an ADSL 2+ connection

I am on the Big Time plan which seems to work quite.

I am not an excessive downloader with torrents and have only done one item.(just to try it out).  I expect I will have my moments!

What I have noticed is that my connection seems to reset once a day during the night.  This issues me with a new IP address which is a pain in the A... when I want to have a manually configured internet connection.  i.e I have to manually update it each day to the new IP.

Two main questions
1.  Is it common that the connection should reset each day?  Could it be the router?
2.  If it does reset daily do I get a new IP address each time?  If I want the same IP address is that a static IP?  does that cost?

Thanks for any advise

Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Unfortunately it's just one of those things with a consumer plan such as big time, they will not allow a static ip - however if you have a thompson router they talk nicely to dyndns.com so as long as your router is running you can always find your pc.

Instructions, goto toolbox, then Dynamic DNS, click configure and select dyndns from the drop down and type the other info you neeed.

Dyndns offers a free service.

If I look at my router it says that the uptime is 11hrs 52mins.  That mean the connection was reset just before midnight.  I certainly did not do it.  Does this mean telecom reset it or did my router reboot?

Again it is a Thomson 585 v7

Thanks

Doesn't sound normal for it to reset every night, could it be an unfiltered device that's calling out like an old alarm or sky box?

Nope. When the installer guy came he checked the alarm etc it is not connected. I do have sky but it is not plugged in. The one phone and the router is filtered with the new filters that came in the box.

I had a similar problem when I switched to Telecom except mine was bouncing around 6 times per day. I complained to Telecom and they said losing connection 6 times per day is acceptable.

I knew this was out of the ordinary and fopr me unacctepable so I kept complaining until I got through to second level support and a tech came out. He checked my house wiring and said everything was fine and I should probably get new filters. I knew this wasn't the problem as I'd tried different filters so I asked him to check my connection at the cabinet. He was reluctant but did and lucikly because it turned out my port was faulty. He switched ports and my connection has been rock solid ever since and has only bounced when I have physically caused it (ie reset the router).

Yeah that's an option I guess, convince them to do a port reset.. but I would be sure you have eliminated house wiring / devices as the problem first.
