Hello

I was having trouble with TVNZ on demand and emailed them about the poor performance with Telecom viewing On demand content.

I got this response below.  I thought popular content was cached by Telecom???  (Then you would have to ask what do the consider popular?  Windows updates!!!  Ha!)

Can anyone tell me if this is right or wrong?  I posted this into the Bigtime problem thread late last month and did not get any responses.

Can someone advise
Thanks
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for your email, and thanks for checking out our site.

We are sorry to hear about your ongoing problems. As previously mentioned we have been investigating this issue for the past few weeks.

ISPs have two options for getting TVNZ content to their users. The first and preferred option, that delivers the best performance to an ISP's customer, is to locate caches (copies) of TVNZ Ondemand content directly within the ISP's local network, or connect directly to our New Zealand cache. ISPs like Vodafone, Orcon, Slingshot, CallPlus, WorldExchange and Snap do exactly this and deliver an optimised service for their customers who choose to view TVNZ Ondemand content.

The second option, employed by Telstra and Telecom, is to retrieve TVNZ Ondemand content from TVNZ's servers in the West Coast of the United States. This model can deliver acceptable levels of service to TVNZ Ondemand across the day but at peak times of internet usage it appears that the TVNZ Ondemand content has to compete with other international traffic coming across the main pipe from the U.S. The result is that at certain times of the day TVNZ Ondemand performance may be sub-optimal for those customers.

We regret the performance problems you are experiencing and can promise that we are doing all we can to enable the best possible experience for all our customers.

Thanks again, and sorry for the inconvenience,

My understanding is...

1: They have Google caching hardware in place and active for youtube and other google owned services.
2: General http and web caching is an ongoing project that is coming soon.

TVNZ on demand content is hosted by CityLink who run national peering exchanges eg: APE and WIX.

Hopefully Telecom (and Telstra too) will reconsider their decision to not peer nationally at APE and WIX as practically every other hosting company and ISP does.

There are a few issues around it though.. Telecom and Telstra would lose significant interconnection revenues, should a content provider (CityLink) really be running peering exchanges.. shouldn't they be independently run... etc etc
