After following this thread, I thought I'd start a new topic instead of hijacking the original (and hopefully get some input from Telecom):

muncher12: Excluded Service
The use of Telecom Mobile Broadband for Voice over IP (VoIP) is excluded.

http://www.telecom.co.nz/content/0,8748,205221-204524,00.html

if i have got it wrong please correct me :)

Interesting - I followed the following links and got a different story:

http://www.telecom.co.nz/help/content/0,10709,206249-204568,00.html

However, I would hazard that the wording of the section originally quoted is unclear on what it's purpose is - specifically what is Voice over IP excluded from?

Thoughts anyone else?

A little while ago I was able to use Skype over 3G on my iPhone. I would test now but I dropped my data plan for this month.

Mm, same here! Is VoIP disallowed or just not supported? :)

At first read it appears Telecom are just covering themselves and trying to set the right customer expectations about a product that is a direct competitor of XT.

If you try and use VoIP applications on the XT Network, find the performance or experience less than satisfactory then TNZ do not want to be held responsible.

I don't believe this mean's XT are trying to stop anyone using VoIP applications, they just wont support VoIP related faults and queries if you have any.

Not sure what Skype is like on XT but if its working, then all good? if it's not working, a call to GeekZone is the only place your likely to get support.

Skype works very well on XT as above telecom will offer you no support for voip apps but it works and in my opinion works very well audio and video.

This question already came up before. The purple booklet that comes with the SIM says on page 10:

"4.6 You agree to:... (l) do not use your Mobile Phone or the Services for voice over internet protocol or messaging over internet protocol;..."

But the official word from Telecom (quoted from an email where I asked for clarification back in July):

"We are not actively enforcing this clause at the moment, we?re reserving the right to make changes or take action in the future if we see a considerable shift in behaviour."

Messaging over Internet Protocol? Can someone tell me what this is? Does this mean no one is allowed to run messaging Applications like MSN etc ?

Thanks freitasm - I guess by agreeing to this, we won't be using active sync on the XT network either (messaging over internet protocol).

A couple of months ago I tried to use Ventrilo (basically a conference-call system, for those unfamiliar) and had to set the APN to direct.telecom.co.nz before it would work. I never even considered that I might be doing something against the TOS, although in this case it's not competing with Telecom (you need to use the software, so I wasn't using it instead of Telecom's per-minute voice service).

Skype works great on the XT network, used the built in webcam of my laptop connected with the Sierra card, Good quality, voice was fine, not too much of a noticable performance difference bewtween broardband and xt network regarding skype.

Great to show off to your friends/family the snow when they're at home in Auckland (Up Mt Ruapehu earlier this year..)
