I'm a Telecom customer. I have two plans, the original Sierra card broadband wireless, reliable, slow, expensive, and the somewhat new XT wireless broadband which is incredibly unreliable, every day I get disconnected but when I'm connected it's faster and not quite so expensive. I currently live in a motorhome crusing the South Island so a hard wired connection is not possible.

Here's my question:  I want to download about 50 Gigs of data, a course (video format) from Yale university, and so what might you suggest? I have family who do have ADSL connections but not a plan that enables such large downloads. I am able to camp on a family doorstep and use their fixed line but I need a provider (and a short-term, say one month, plan) who can accomadate this somewhat unusual request.

Many thanks for suggestions.

Telecom Business Advanced, 60 GB, $109.95/month. Excess is only $3/GB. Max speeds. Then pay the disconnection fee.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Thanks Ross, that was quick. Might just be the perfect solution.

If they already have a adsl connection, switch them to telecom Bigtime, $60 a month, it might be slower but you will get your data down, then pay to disconnect back to old provider, or they can switch to another telecom plan for free

What provider/ISP is the family with?

If it's Telecom, they can do one free plan residential plan change per calendar month on Telecom.  They do a partial pro rata change for the time spend on each plan.

Switch to Big Time while you're there then next calendar month switch back.

Seems my family is with Ihug. Best plan I see is 20 gig for $100.00. Not even remotely competitive with Telecom, or am I missing something.

I'm thinking, leave my family Ihug plan alone and in as much as I am already a Telecom (see above) customer perhaps I might add on a fixed line plan using the family telephone line. I presume, perhaps incorrectly, that using the same line, always at different times of course, and using the same router (or I can easily purchase another if necessary) would work.

Is this a workable solution, do you think?

Don't think it's possible to use the same line for two different accounts.

You could get adsl on a 2nd line (if the have a spare 2nd line), most relatively modern house wiring has two pairs of phone wiring throughout for a 2nd line.

Thinking outside the box a little bit, I'd suggest that you simply ask Yale University if they offer the course on DVD format they can post to you.

seems to be the simplest solution.

unless you are torrenting the file illegally,  then I bet they offer that service.

Ask Yale university? You should read my email to them! I told them that they are by far the best university in the world, which they are, that the opportunity to 'attend' Yale, take a course, free for gods sake, I can't believe how cool this is.

So yes, I asked nicely if DVD delivery is an option, I'd happily pay for, I told them. We shall see, but my guess is that while online delivery is not a big deal these days DVD production is not without complications, for them. I would neither count on it or expect it but great suggestion and I'm giving that a go.

Yes, second line, Ragnor thanks, I'm pretty sure the family line is a single line and dodgy at that.

Think I'll call Telecom and ask what they can offer.

The other option is to pay someone on geekzone to download it on their fast connection and post it to you :) I'm not offering, but it's another solution.

Whatdaya mean you're not offering. How about if I pay you a million bucks a download! Maybe you'd think about it. On second thoughts...no, I withdraw that offer; probably get it for less, but a good idea, for sure. Thanks exportgoldman.

I was wondering if such a service exists. This is all a bit odd for me in that I've only recently returned to New Zealand. I've been living in central Mexico for many years. I had an ADSL plan with Sympatico, like $50.00 NZ per month and absolutely no cap whatsoever on downloads. I was most often on 24/7 music, movies, videos...paradise. And coming up against the reality of the constraints back here at home is not a good thing.

Oh well, the people (my family especially), and the landscapes here are nice but the internet connectivity sucks. And it might come to that: find and pay someone for the service. I mean, it really should be easy to download big files.

When it comes to the state of internet connectivity here, it's not good enough. Maybe I'm totally missing something...

Joker97, you're joking, right, a 97% joke. Damn, I see you are a 'trusted' (and I do like your speakers). How wonderful. I am very grateful. Guarantee be damned, how do we proceed? Incredibly kind of you. The upside, other than unquestionably securing yourself a comfortable spot in heaven (in due course) is that you get to have a copy too. The course is 'Introduction to Theory of Literature with Professor Paul H. Fry' and here is the URL

http://oyc.yale.edu/english/introduction-to-theory-of-literature/content/downloads

I already have download 1 & 2 (chewed up my monthly allowance, more or less)

I need to check out Slingshot!

And it seems, sep11guy, that each section is about half a gig in size, more or less. Of course I'll take care of the cd's and shipping. Can you burn data DVD's?
