Possible already mentioned and slipped by me durign the crazy season but I see Telecom are now offering free modem upgrades to existing home broadband users, 12mth resign = free ADSL2 modem, 24mth = free wireless ADSL2 modem.

It has always been a bugbear of mine that new connections could take advantage of similar deals but existing (read loyal) consumers were blatantly overlooked but it looks like logic has prevailed, i have received confirmation of acceptance so now i jsut sit and wait for my new modem to turn up, top stuff TCNZ!

Hint hint....Now all I need you to do is package up a too good to refuse CDMA to XT changeover offer to lock me into XT ;)

Mind you i have been a loyal and trouble free customer for quite a few years now so it is nice to now see some recognition from a big corporate who is starting to recognise the value of us little guys who support through thick and thin.

I personally think the Thompson routers they give out are not well suited for geek users who want to be able to change/tweak things

....OR who want NAT, IGP/Upnp/NAT-PMP, port forwarding to work properly for gaming and torrenting.

So you'd be locked into a 12 month contract in exchange for what a $50-90 worth router, I'd rather choose my own hardware that works better and remain open to change ISP as I felt like.

Yep agreed, I'd rather pay a little more for my own router and get something I like/does what I want, instead of getting something for free that isn't really suitable (and means a two year contract)!

Maybe I am just not geekie enough :P but the freebie will do all that i need it to do, i have no reason to change ISP's having been with Telecom for a number of years so it makes good sense to me

Yep, not everyone is a geek, and some people just want a new single PC or Wireless router that works and is support by their ISP.

Agreed it can be helpful for some. My father just got the offer the other day and I got him to accept - and I pinched the new Thomson!

Slightly OT, but it is interesting how the offers are made (and to whom). Cleaning out the office yesterday I came across my original application for Xtra dial-up, dated August 1996 (!!) - funny what you keep! Now, having been a loyal Xtra customer for 13.5 years (upgraded to broadband pretty much as soon as it was available), I still haven't received any offer for a free "upgrade" to the Thomson. I'm not hugely fussed, but it does raise the questi0on of whether or not they actually know I'm a customer.

Cheers for that link. Only question is whether I will bother to upgrade Dad's G604T - I haven't noticed any particular improvement in service/speed etc with the Thomson over my old G604T - its always so damn hard to tell whether there is an improvement or not. Is there any specific reason why the Thomson would be better? I'm not generally into freebies just for the sake of it - more e-waste!

Is you're Dad's G604T a Gen1 or Gen2?

Gen1:

Gen2:

Gen1's are ADSL1, while Gen 2's are ADSL2+ (you can check if ADSL2+ is an option for you here: http://www.telecomwholesale.co.nz/maps

I used to have a Gen1, it is mad these funny noises, maybe it was just me or just that unit, but since I have used the Thompson and I liked it more than the D-Link in terms of interface which is simple, and now I'm using the 2wire, which is better again, more control of the network with out doing anything too complicated or spending hours on Google finding out how :)

Gen I can also support ADSL2+ with the right firmware version.

G604T Gen I with firmware version above ver.2.0 is able to support ADSL2+

I told a customer to ring them up and ask for one.. She did, modems turned up awaiting me to set it up for her.. Was just going to sell her a wireless router but the old d-link's ethernet port was poked..

It is the Gen-II with 2+.

OT, but checking the map link for ADSL2+ rollout on the Paraparaumu exchange, I click on "show cabinets" and see that I am not covered by one of the cabinet areas? Live on State Hway 1 north of PRM. For a simpleton like me, what does this mean for my 2+ potential in future?

You shouldn't need to click on show cabinets. Is you're exchange upgraded to ADSL2+?

If so post your routers ADSL stats (perhaps a new thread rather than hijacking this one further as we've done!). There are a number of helpful ADSL knowledgeable geeks on here :)

Hi Tony, Yep Kapiti and district is one of the last areas to be cabinetised.

If you have the option to upgrade from the 604 to the Thompson and you have no intention of moving providers in the signup holdin time then its a good option. The Thompson is a good unit with the best match chipset for the new Altatel ISAM (DSLAMs) ie Broadcom.

dont throw out your old 604 as you can use it as a WiFi AP extention unit to extend you wireless coverage.

Cheers S - and a Happy New Year (although I hope you're going away somewhere to get away from our dodgy Kapiti weather at some stage!).

Might as well upgrade then I guess (after 13.5 years I don't see myself moving from Xtra soon). I'll now have 2x 604's to play with (seeing as how they apparently won't work as wireless router on friend's TCL cable - as per other topic you have replied to!).
