Hi, this is my first post.


I am really stumped by my situation and i have hit a brick wall and can't figure it out.


I have an iPhone 3G running the latest software update from Apple. I purchased the phone from Apple NZ so it was unlocked and i installed a carrier bundle and it has been running on XT Network flawlessly, except email connectivity. I can send a recieve emails when i am connected to a WiFi network, but obviously i am not always on a WiFi network. I am unable to send and recieve emails on the Telecom XT Cellular Network. 


My email account is hosted by disscountdoamins.co.nz and my outgoing server is smtp.xtra.co.nz. Is it possible to make my email service work while i am on the go.


I use Microsoft Entourage on my Macbook Pro for my email on computer.




Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You need to have an Xtra account to use the Xtra SMTP server.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to XT SMTP settings but my understanding was Telecom don't actually have a public one like Vodafone do that all customers can use. You need to use the SMTP server which is typically provided by your email provider or a public one such as Google or private SMTP server.

I thought i was using the SMTP settings?

incoming server is: mail.discountdomains.co.nz
Outgoing Server is: smtp.xtra.co.nz

Have i got something wrong?

The correct SMTP server for Xtra is send.xtra.co.nz however again as sbiddle says you need to have an Xtra account to use it. If you have an Xtra account login to the webmail interface on your PC and choose options and accounts or similar, you can add you're domain email address there and then and only then will you be able to use Xtra's SMTP server.

Yes, your SMTP server should be something like smtp.discountdomains.co.nz

If it works fine from home then I guess he's got an xtra address, just need to set the reply path to the other domain - that should work?

You could use the reply path, but thats rather messy.

Better to use an SMTP server from Xtra or Google.

its not a xtra address like normal. it is (myname)@benbrae.co.nz, it is hosted by discount domains NZ.

What NZBNW was getting at is that if you've got an Xtra account you can use that to 'authenticate' with the SMTP server send.xtra.co.nz - if you don't have an xtra account (home or work) you simply can't send with that SMTP server.

this guide gives you some information about setting the smtp server

there are also so guides in the nz.yahoo.com website (not for the iphone though)

If you get stuck then post the problem and i'm sure there are people who will be willing to help on the forum

Where are you based?

Do you have an Xtra or Gmail email address in addition to your domain email?
