Hello Geekzone Community,

I'm currently a Telecom customer, with an broadband 'explorer' plan.
At our flat, we hardly ever ever never use the landline. So I see it as unnecessary to pay the $45-odd land line rental for the service.

I have spoken to Telecom, and they say they are not willing to waive the rental or let me be on a 'user pays' kind of scheme. I understand that technically the landline needs to be active - but it is the same as standing at my rubbish bin every month and emptying my wallet.
Vodafone and Telstra Clear also can't help.

Can anyone suggest a remedy for me?
I am a heavy internet user, so need broadband but can do without paying for the land line.

Xnet (World Xchange), Slingshot are just two that offer these services.. there are probably more but those are the two off the top of my head..

I'm currently with World Xchange and its not too bad.

Prob best to go with Snap for nDSL because chances are if you switch to Xnet you will be pretty annoyed at the lack of speed/cutouts :)

Although their free data useage overnight from 2-8am is nice for the torrent plan

I have moved across the ditch. Now residing in Melbourne as a VOIP/Video Technical Trainer/Engineer.

I'd say that alot of people would be thinking the same thing as you these days, when you think about it landline is actually quite a rip!

I'm in Christchurch and have TelstraClear cable broadband. I don't have anything else - no landline - no TV, just high speed broadband.

The minimum package is 10GB a month for $55.

Chances are though that the OP isn't in a TelstraClear area.. like 80% of New Zealanders..

gtxboyracer: Chances are though that the OP isn't in a TelstraClear area.. like 80% of New Zealanders..

+1, the telstra clear runs about 2m away from my boundary :( but they won't hook it up, because it'd mean digging up a few metres of the road :(

but the natural gas company offered to do it for free + 40m of piping :S if i took out gas hot water heating with them

As far as I know, TelstraClear have Christchurch, parts of Auckland, and 70% of Wellington (everywhere apart from the whole Porirua City, Tawa, all the way through to Plimmerton..

Sucks really.. they need to expand!

Yeah I'm Main road in tawa, straight where the cable runs through :( but they won't wire it up

maybe I'll try negotiate, so when they do the gas I can get the cable through the same trench, have to call some Telstra techs this afternoon i think :)

TelstraClear's HFC network isn't in Auckland, only Chch, Wgtn and Kapiti.

TelstraClear do have a rather extensive fibre and copper network throughout the country including a large number of exchanges where they have deployed their ULL services.

Getting back to the original poster - you can get broadband without a phoneline but you'll have to change ISP. Telecom don't offer the service.

You say you're on Explorer, that's the 10GB per month plan... I would call that light not heavy.

Naked ADSL can definitely save you money if you are light data user.

Hers's a good list of Naked ADSL providers in NZ

Telstra have fibre running right along the main road. It's of no use to you through, you can't just "tap" into it.

Original poster thought they were throwing away about $45 a month, naked DSL through telecom wholesale, only saves $15-$20 a month as posted above, so having phone line compared to naked is just over $15 a month, so unless telstra is available direct all you can save without phone line is this amount.

I went naked DSL way originaly saving about $30 a month, then within a year naked dsl provider put price up and telecom dropped their's by $10 so they were both the same price. I realised could've found cheaper naked dsl provider for around $70 a month, but thought for extra $18, miles well have phone line even though hardly use it.
