Hi,

I am organising an event in the Wellington Fringe Festival

RUNTIME

Using a telecom t-stick, we (the russian frost farmers) are going to stream a live webcam from a laptop that will be roaming through the city as part of the performance.

Rather than using Skype or ustream tv, i have been exploring setting up a streaming webcam using Microsoft Encoder 9 so that a raw ip address can be imported into a vj program, to be used as another channel.

So far i have been able to do stream a webcam on my normal broadband wireless router to local computers by setting up a static ip and port forwarding.

Looking for advice on how to do this on a telecom t-stick.

I don't quite entirely get what you are trying to do but assume you can to use Windows Media Encoder and allow clients to connect directly to that stream?

The problem with doing this is that everybody has to connect to the machine that is running the stream which will suck your bandwidth dry very fast. You need to be running a server somewhere for all the clients to connect to. In this case any Windows Server can run Windows Media Services to do this and Windows Media Encoder simply pushes a single stream to the server.

For what you're attmepting to do I would have thought ustream was probably the best approach.

Steve is right there. You won't have enough up bandwidth to cope with many clients connecting to your stream. You should really use a "broker" service such as UStream.

Thankyou for the replys.

The roaming laptop webcam stream only needs to be picked up by one client.

This one client (back at the russian frost farmers gallery) is connected to a fixed broadband connection.

So bandwidth is not an issue.

The vj program (arkaos grand vj 1.2 - (they have a nice full working demo but with watermark)) that will use the webcam feed requires that feed comes from a DirectShow type stream. The input window allows you to enter a raw url - and I have tested this by using webcam streams from the internet.

The vj program doesn't appear to allow Flash type streams - ie. ustream tv

I am hoping to either:

stream the webcam directly from the roaming laptop to the fixed vj computer by using the ip address of the roaming laptop

or by streaming the webcam to a page on our website and pulling the feed from our website into the vj program.

But using Microsoft Encoder 9 with the Telecom T-Stick does not seem to pick up an ip address for the laptop.

I had found the ip address when on the Telecom t-stick mobile network by looking at 'whats my ip address' type websites.

I then went into the TCP settings for the t-stick and could change the settings from allocated to use this ip.

However unlike the tests I did with our broadband router where i could also find the dns settings and set up port forwarding I don't know how this can be done on the t-stick.

if this is not possible does anyone know of another thirdparty - like ustream - that allows broadcasting as a DirectShow type stream.

Telecom XT allocates dynamic IP only. You should not change the IP settings for your USB modem (T Stick).

Also there are different APNs - most of the times you won't get a public IP, but a NAT address. You probably should use the direct.telecom.co.nz APN (http://wiki.geekzone.co.nz/Telecom%20New%20Zealand%20Mobile.ashx).

Once you use the direct APN your client can connect to your mobile device. ince the IP changes when the connection changes, you probably should register a temporary address with www.dyndns.org and use one of their clients to update the DNS. This way your client can just point to the name (mywebcam.homeip.net for example) instead of IP address.
