My Nokia 6255 has N100V1700.np (03-06-05)
But I see my mates new Nokia 6255 has N100V2600.nep (28-09-05)
What am I missing out on with the upgraded firmware?

True take it into the mobilerepair place, if you have your proof of purchase they will upgrade it for free. I just got mine back today and is finally working.

Don't take it back to your telecom shop (unless you want to wait 1-2 weeks), as they send it to the repair place which will take much longer... I took mine direct to the repair shop and they did it within 2 hours.

New update also removes need to enter init string (+crm=1;+cso=33 ) when using as a modem
