Hey everyone,

Just joined up to geekzone (you guys seem to know a lot more than customer support a lot of the time :) ) I have an LG CU920, which is compatible with the XT Network, so I switched over to XT yesterday and it has been working fine.

I tried configuring mobile internet on my phone, and no matter what I do I don't seem to be able to get it working (and what use is being on the fastest network when I can't use it?)

On this phone, I can add 'network profiles' which sets up:
- connection title
- bearer (set on GPRS)
- authentication (no auth/PAP/CHAP)
- username
- password
- APN

Then under the web browser settings, I can set up 'accounts' which sets up:
- account name
- homepage
- connection mode (TCP with proxy/TCP without proxy/UDP(CO)/UDP(CL))
- proxy address
- proxy port number
- security (non-secure/secure)
- time out
- network profile (where I select one of the configured network profiles like above).

I have been trying varying combinations of APNs and network profiles from various pages on this forum with no success.  Would anybody have any ideas on which settings i should be trying for 'network profile' and 'accounts' to get mobile internet working? I even signed up for a data plan as well!

perhaps someone with an LG phone already setup, or more mobile networking knowledge could help me out?   Any advice would be appreciated.  I called up customer service to be told that they didn't have internet settings (!!!)

thank you :)

The APNs and other configuration you need are listed here: http://wiki.geekzone.co.nz/Telecom%20New%20Zealand%20Mobile.ashx.

Note that if you got this handset from AT&T it may have some configuration locked down and may or may not work for mobile data.

I was wondering whether AT&T might have a configuration lockdown, but it seems really unlikely because:
- people in the states have successfully unlocked their LG CU920s from the AT&T network, connected to the t-mobile network and set up their internet browser to work as well.
- the fact that I can add extra network profiles and browser accounts really suggests otherwise.

I have tried the mobile settings with the direct, internet, and wap APNs and it just keeps popping up with 'connection fail'. are there any other possibilities on why it won't work?

Have you used this SIM card on another handset and confirmed your account can actually access mobile data?

Is it a prepay account? If you are using casual data then you must have a minimum balance to access mobile data on prepay.

aha! there's an idea - I will temporarily confiscate the next acquaintance i meet with an XT-compatible phone and check. (how did I not think of that?!)

It's postpaid so that shouldn't be a problem.

Thank you - will let you know how this goes.

BTW - thought you'd enjoy this http://www.trademe.co.nz/Mobile-phones/Telecom-XT/auction-273606747.htm

I tried accessing the internet on XT compatible phone with my sim card in it, and it worked without any problems so it is definitely nothing to do with the sim.

Since I have tried all of the APNs to no avail, I have a feeling that the reason why it is not connecting is because I cannot change the bearer from GPRS to anything else (i.e. packet data). I had assumed that GPRS and packet data were the same thing, but I guess it isn't.

I guess I will be going back to vodafone since I need to be able to access mobile internet - thank you so much for your help, I hope that this post helps out others who are in a similar situation.

GPRS is 2G. Won't work on Telecom XT at all. Will work fine on Vodafone.

I can't believe that they market this phone as a 3G phone in the states when I can't change the gprs to packet data grr...

i need to be able to access data on my phone, so 5 days after switching over from vodafone to telecom, it looks like i will be switching over again.

thanks to everybody for your help!

The phone is 3G. "Bearer GPRS" means only packet data service, not necessarily "GPRS only".

The problem is that this is a phone made for AT&T with AT&T customisations. I have two AT&T handsets here (both smartphones) and the amount of AT&T customisation is incredible. Lucky on Windows Mobile you can change options in the registry and make it work like you want. For example mobile data tethering was locked to AT&T MediaNet - an option you can unlock using the registry. Another example? You have to use the registry key RegOverridesSIM to enable you to change the voice mail access number, otherwise any voice mail flag set by the network wouldn't be reset.

If people complain about Vodafone custom firmware... Using an imported phone that is made for a specific network is not a good move. The best options are imported phones using stock firmware from the manufacturer - not always possible though.

Sometimes rather deeply embedded, see eg
http://www.ditii.com/2009/02/17/microsoft-and-telstra-unveil-telstra-interface-for-windows-mobile-phones/

Unfortunately not always only the registry - eg in the case of Telstra HTC Touch Diamond2 T5362 (even though supplied "unlocked") the TouchFlo 3D 2.1 interface has "Telstra" modifications to internal files (not merely XML files).

It's a real pity that some networks feel obliged to completely clamp down their phones all for the sake of a few extra bucks..

I went into the engineer settings and tried a couple of settings, I went into the system files to try and find anything that could be restricting the internet settings to just GPRS, but to no avail.    Unfortunately in the process of tweaking the engineer settings, i bricked the phone so it just keeps rebooting and looping.

The LG Mobile driver almost always never works (99% my computer doesn't recognise the phone, it just says its un unknown device) so I can't get into the system files to reflash it either...

Perhaps this should serve as a warning to people importing phones (at least from AT&T anyway), in case their mobile internet is locked!

Just a side note - is there a physical way to reset phones to factory settings? Like a trigger or button on the circuitboard or something? that could be an easier way to fix my phone...
