Just saw in the online NZ Herald that Vodafone is offering to credit the break fee for any XT customer wanting to break contract to move to Vodafone.  Interestingly, no mention of whether there is any upper limit (considering Paul says that one customer got a $1500 bill for breaking term, that's a pretty hefty credit!)

Interesting strategy, but considering Vodafone's had their share of issues in the past with Telecom barely batting an eyelid, aren't they being just a bit loud and obnoxious?

I think it is fair game - there's nothing wrong with some healthy competition.

About time we have had some good acquisition deals, 2degrees and slingshot were offering some stellar deals too. Telecom have offered a larger credit to porting-in customers for a while.

To me this shows how healthy competition is in the mobile market.

We might think we're paying too much for calling but this doesn't change the fact that compeition is very strong in the market.

Fair game, TNZ did it to VF with the iPhone!

I'm sure TNZ will come back with a counter offer once the network is stable.

It's a win, win for the customer. :)

Oh, don't worry, I was jsut adding a starting point for the discussion.  I think it's actually outstanding, since there'll quite likely be quite the counteroffer.  I do think maybe Vodafone is putting in jabs at Telecom perhaps a bit too frequently though, almost every article about the XT issues Paul pops in to mutter about joining "NZ's reliable mobile network", when as you point out, what network hasn't had issues?

It's interesting the lengths the three mobile companies will go to these days to get customers - it's been a long time since we had competition this fierce (why, I remember the old days when every week there was a "switch to us" promotion!)  Don't see much from the MVNOs though.

@kyanar have a look at Slingshot's home page if you want to see what the MVNOs are up to...

And I don't mutter about having a reliable network.. I'm very loud about it ;-). Yes, networks have issues - but they should be invisible to the customer.

Cheers

Paul

Actually, that's not too shabby a deal they have there. Cheaper than 2degrees even. I guess they just haven't got around to the TV ads yet.

I note Paul that you guys aren't applying upper limits to the amount you're crediting - aren't you worried that someone's going to come along with a several thousand dollar termination charge, especially since you're offering the same deal to business?

It does suck a bit though that you can't really pick the phone, but you can't argue with "Free".

Just to clarify - you can take the phone or take the equivalent credit ($400) towards another phone.

and no worries, if they get charged $1500 for ETC we'll add that to the account.

Business customers will be handled on a case-by-case as they tend to have bespoke plans/deals etc. But they're more than welcome to join in the rush...

Please be aware, porting is taking longer to process due to the backlog. We've got extra staff working all weekend to catch up but the demand is high so it may take a little longer than usual. Apologies to all.

cheers

Paul

Hmmm, the offer of putting the credit towards another phone is tempting.
something like an E71 or more business centric phone would be a better bet as battery life isn't the greatest on the 6121 due to it's small size.

Question, can the credit be put towards an iPhone? Mine is starting to get lines on the screen.

Business customers get the E63, not the 6121.

Paul, you might want to fix the website, as it says that you have to take the offered phone.  Unless you're hoping to try and get most people taking the offered and give the "squeaky wheels" a phone credit of course.

i would imagine if you get a $1500 disconnection fee, that would mean that they have a fair few phones on the account so it would still be worth it.

And also its been regularly not working during hours of business so xt is not fit for purpose and you should be able to leave without a cancellation fee - within reason.

here is a thought.

If you are wanting to stay on XT but want an iphone,  would it be a good option to cancel your XT contract,  get your break fee refunded by Voda, take the iPhone on Voda on the cheapest plan you can  (I presume the break fee refund is on top of the normal subsidy you get - if not, then it is a bit of a BS offer),  then cancel your iPhone contract with Voda, pay the break fee there and sign back up to XT again to get the $xxx credit for bringing your voda to XT to offset that break fee.

A lot of hassle I'm sure,  but do the numbers stack up?

Im guessng not, but might be worth investigating.
