on the telecom wikipedia page it says the cdma network will be guaranteed to run till at least june 2012. what if people currently have prepay cdma phones and still have credit in their account, would telecom be able to turn off their cdma network legally? i know people can just buy an xt phone but what if they don't want to?

Same thing would have happened when 025 was turned off. Did'nt stop them then and won't stop them in 2012. I would imagine they will give plenty of advance notice.

I've run my credit down to 2 dollars. Had old vodafone with sim that expired, so put 2 degress sim in. Just keeping cdma phone for back up, not going to put money on phone that's going to shut down. If low spender save money on 2 degress, if using text plan or something on telecom then be using your credit up easy any way. Sim spelling corrected as noted in post below.

Havnt they been giving notice already by stating that the network will operate until at least 2012?
I put my money on June01 2012 as the last 2 year contract for CDMA was not avaialbe after 29/05/2009

We may decide to stop providing any of our services to you. If we do this, we will try to tell you at least one month before we stop providing the service. We may do this by putting a notice in major daily newspapers. The agreement you have with us will remain in place.

Whether they have liability to you is another story, but they certainly can flick the off switch by simply giving one month's notice.

Telecom own their own CDMA network. And I'm certain that their T's&C's have been closely monitored by the legal department before adding them to contracts. As previously stated Telecom have been very open about when they will shut down the network.

If they have 1000's of customers still actiuvely using and spending $$ on the CDMA network do you think they 'll cut them off at the knees with no notice. No.

There's a linein the sand that says, 2012. That's the target they are working to. Once things get stabilised with XT and the majority of their mobile share is on the new network, to fund the operational costs of keeping the CDMA network up ad infitum would be ludicrous at best ... insane at worst :)

ANyway, the world is ending in 2012 so what does it matter ... wheeeeeeeee

SKY TV shut down their UHF feed when there were still subscribers on it. The Satellite services costs more so all the UHF subscribers were losing a cheaper service. They decided to give the UHF subscribers free sat upgrades and leave them at the old price for the next 12 months, after which all their subscriptions will go up. I expect that by the time they made this decision, keeping the old UHF network running was probably starting to cost them money.

I expect that Telecom will allow you to upgrade to a new XT prepaid plan and keep your credit (and phone number). They most likely already do. I doubt they will give you a free phone on prepaid though.

and they are! $10 text finishing at the end of this month. CDMA will surely have no youth users using it very soon.
seems telecoms effort to move everyone onto XT is backfiring aswell... the end of $10 txt, and the screw ups XT has had makes it look like vodafone will be taking out the prize of the youth market soon enough...

whether vodafone want that or not is another story...

$10 TXT has been extended indefinitely, I thought.

And Vodafone don't really have anything comparable. Their text plans are primarily on-net (which is fine - I understand why Vodafone don't offer something similar to $10 txt/non stop text) and so don't suit people with friends on multiple networks.

Additionally, I don't think network outages affect teens as much as businesses. Many have multiple phones anyway. Plus it has only been Taupo-south going down on XT.

i wonder why they don't just text message all their cdma customers 1 month in advance before the network closes instead of putting ads in newspapers? or can't they tell which numbers are on xt and which on cdma?

millions are probably still on cdma because XT went live only last year.

As already mentioned, Telecom have made an effort to move their customers over to XT. On Account customers will get free/subsidised phones, and for the Prepaid market they're ending (or maybe already have) CDMA $10 txt, while introducing unlimited $12 txt on XT. Most of the customers they'll have left by June 2012 will be very light cellphone users, I'd imagine a large number of them only turn on their cellphones every few months or don't know how to read a text message.
