can anyone help me as drivers won't work

i found a bigpond driver that supports 10.3.9 but i cant seem change the  APN: or Phone number to XT's.. its seems to locked to bigpond but shows connection to network

any other ideas on getting this working 

i dont want to take my mom's laptop to 10.5 as its only a old ibook

It should be fine upgrading the iBook to 10.5 (in fact it should run faster), obviously the G4 processor won't allow you to upgrade any further than that. 
That should solve any problems you have with the USB modem (I doubt any drivers will or ever will be available for an operating system that was released in 2003 (7 years ago)

hmm is it really 7 years old  OUCH

its only a G4/800 12-Inch... you really think it will run ?

but i could put up to 1gig of memory in it to help

It should work fine, I don't think you can pop 1GB of RAM in the iBook, from memory (I had the 1GHz G4) it has 128MB soldered onboard, and one slot (that came with another 128MB removable at purchase) Pretty sure it will only accept a further 512MB....taking you up to 640MB....but it may pay to check.

But I still think you'll be ok on Panther....my one is running that (Mum and Dad now have the computer) without any issue

OH cool i already have 512MB stick in there... i hope it will work

guess i will just have to install from firewire target disk mode

one question when i nearly installed via firewire target disk ( before i stopped as i didnt have time)  it told me i had to reformat the drive with GUID ( i think that was it )  is this ok to do? 

i dont want to spend hours doing this to find it dosent work and have to reinstall 10.3.9

You are best to install via the install disks if possible, from memory it doesn't allow you to install from target drive (I could be wrong here to anyone feel free to correct)

I was using install disks but Laptop not supported so won't install.. I have to do it from my MBP via firewire..

please correct me if there is a better way..

it was just the reformatting of the drive that worried me...

If the laptop isn't supported than I wouldn't try and install at all...I can only assume you are trying to install OSX using the disks that came with another Mac (ie, not a standalone install). If this is the case, you would be breaking the licensing agreement which will probably cause issues down the road. You should be able pick up a retail box of OSX 10.4 on Trademe pretty cheaply however.

back to the original problem the XT modem stick needs 10.5 to work.....  so 10.4 is no use to me

Ah, yes....10.5 is what I meant...either way, you'll need a standalone version to install on your iBook (the bundled version that comes with any new Mac is tied to that piece of hardware).

And I need to correct my dates from above, OSX 10.5 "Leopard" was released on October 26, 2007

thanks so much i already own a stand alone copy... but ibook not supported 

I dont have a problem using 10.5 even if unsupported but would be good to hear if it works or not..

From Wikipedia....looks like your 800MHz processor falls just short by 67Mhz in the minimum spec race....not sure what would happen if you tried to install, but I'd imagine it would look at your machine spec and terminate based on the processor clock speed no matter the method on installation (disk versus Target disk mode)

hmmm terminate do to the processor... i have never seen a mac do that before and i have done a few doggy installs before on older mac's..

anyone else ?

Terminate the install based on the fact your system isn't up to spec...nothing usual about that. There is probably some way of fooling the system, but too be honest, you'd be much better off upgrading your laptop that is at least 7 years old (that's very old in laptop years).

Be interesting to see if you can make it work though...please post back here if you are successful
