I've been reading about wireless but $1000 for the equipment!!

Can I buy used or from the States or something??

Also been looking at Farmside http://www.farmside.co.nz/ Who say they can get broadband to everybody when Telecom tell me they have no plans to upgrade my exchange/cabinet .

Cheers for the help if any, Ken.

Yes, knowing the area helps a lot... And I didn't know xtra put wireless equiment (except those Wi-Fi kits they sell on Dick Smith now, but that's for wireless inside your place, not for long distance, last mile access).

I'm in Prebbleton Canterbury. Xtra (telecom) were quite confident I couldn't have broadband.

No Woosh have said no, I filled out the form anyway so I guess they'll let me know.

The Farmside thing is interesting tho, how can they connect me up when Telecom can't (won't)

Hi there - if i was you i wouldn't commit to Xtra wireless now or Farmsides package of it etc.

I am aware of a Nationwide wireless network going commercial early in 2006 with better pricing, speeds, options such as private networking solutions and much more, designed primarily for the rural market.

I can't confirm any more about the new network but Xtra wireless is a rip off and the customer service behind it is very poor (from multiple experiences). Plus if they see trees on the Sat photo they wont come out and look at options for providing the service, instead they will suggest the farmside Sat service.

This new supplier should provide a welcome change to the current offering.

Thankyou for that news, I'll hang in here on dial-up and see what the new year brings. You can't tell me what company is bringing this out.

Any idea how much that Farmside sat is?

I have a mate at BCL, could he hook me up with the right gear?

Cheers, Ken.

You can buy the BCL gear second hand at times, ask your mate.

Note that BCL's service is subsidized in some areas only. (farm side repackage & use it from Telecom)

Once new providers come online the subs may be removed soon after through the Probe campaign.

I would be hesitant in regards to hooking up to this service at this stage.

Both sat and this service have a horrendous set up cost!

Sat at the mo i think starts at $199, they are planning to package it so you can have one sat and up to 5 others connecting so to save on costs. Limited bandwidth limit and other issues to think of as well.

This is not really needed when other wireless offerings coming soon provide low priced deals with 2gb data a month download at 256kbps and 512kbps and which are symetrical more as you are willing to pay.

Xtra wireless or BCL Xtend is actually pretty good for an incumbent wireless provider . Speeds are limited to 256 & 512 kbps and possibly 2mbps in future (service is capable of 2mbps)

Problem is until early next year it's the only major Wireless option for rural NZ and to get it at a property which has an obscured view of a tower can be near on impossible due to the the people selling it. There are ways around this but often Xtra wireless & Farmside team aren't interested.

Keep everyone posted as news comes to hand on this
