I've been a Telecom BB customer for the last two years and have been quite happy with the service and reliability over that time.  However, while deliberating my monthly spend I noticed that some of the other broadband providers offer really good deals.

I originally was in a share house and we needed high cap so have been on a pro 40GB plan.  Since moving out the plan has stayed the same, but I'm using between 10 -20 GB a month (mostly browsing, working from home and youtube - no bittorrent, P2P usage or gaming), so a move to downgrade the plan makes sense.  Speaking to the Telecom CSR it seemed the cheapest option is $110 (including landline) as opposed to a competitors 26GB plan at $95.

Will I notice any performance issues (other than lower cap) by downgrading my plan and is there anything that puts Telecom above the other ISPs that i should be aware of.  Would moving to a competitor and paying $15 less a month cost me in the long run?

Any thoughts and experiences would be appreciated.

Total home offers unlimited 2hour toll calls(local) which is why it cost more then most other packages out there, plus believe it or not telecom has the best internet service :P

I am in the process of moving to Telecom.  I have been told that I can get a basic "home line" and 20gb broadband for $90ish.  I don't remember the exact number.

This may be slightly cheaper because I'm in Wellington.  The Telecom CSR is giving you the wrong price. You probably need to ring and ask again for the cheapest option.

20GB in Auckand, without a Total Home Package would cost $42.80 for the Landline and $60 for the Broadband plan, $102.80

Or go for Total Home Lite ($80 includes Landline, 5GB Broadband, and you can choose one national Landline number to call at no extra charge) plus $20 to upgrade the Broadband plan to 20GB, $100.

Thanks for the info.  I'm still undecided, but am tending to swing towards moving to Orcon as their package seems better value.

I was with Orcon and moved back to telecom, the speeds were quite erratic and sometimes you would get better performance than telecom; other times very poor speeds.

Their service was fantastic, however had problems with the LLU phone system, random issues, like caller ID not working, they only had a few smart phone features, once it failed due to a software upgrade that went wrong.

I find being with telecom now, you get consistent speeds; I am on ADSL2+ and would not consider moving.

And so they should, Telecom seem to have the economies of scale to provide a more consistent service.

It's theBronze package with an upgrade to 26GB.  I don't care for any of the other stuff other than basic land line capability.  I don't need smart phone functions, have a company mobile which I can use for personal use and use a low rate calling card for calling overseas.

Are you or will you be connected to a cabinet?  If so, then changing to a LLU provider may not be a good idea, as you probably won't get good performance from their exchange equipment, and you may need to be connected through Telecom Wholesale.  So you will then pay more per month than the advertised price.

I've just changed to Telecom from Orcon.  I can now watch Youtube in the evenings, torrents are about 10 times faster, and files from overseas sites download at a decent speed.

XT should be removed from this equation since we are talking about broadband :)
And Telecom Broadband is still one of the best providers concerning up time
