I went to my telecom store today to sign up for a new contract and get a new phone, I had been told over the phone by telecom that I could spread the cost of the phone over a year (she didn't mention anything about it having to be worth more than a certain amount). The phone I want originally costs $400 but comes at a special price with this contract. The guy in the shop said the phone had to be worth more than $500 to spread the payments. Has anyone got a phone less than $500 recently with XT and spread the payments over a year? Cheers.

Not spread payments, but was offered to charge a $499 phone to my Telecom home bill.

in the brochure i picked up it says you can spread the payments over 12 months if the phone is worth $450 or more. we'll see how it works out, maybe they might let us spread the payments even though its worth $400. otherwise both of us will end up moving to vodafone no doubt. spreading the payments is a good reason to stay with telecom as vodafone don't offer that.

It wasn't like that beforem they've changed things recently I think. Well I've been speaking to Telecom and they have been kind enough to offer me the phone I wanted for free as it wouldn't be possible to set up the deferred payments on a $400 phone. That is pretty good of them, not sure Vodafone would have done the same.

Was this deferred payment via a Telecom account?? We bought a R7 @$299 last year and paid it off over 12 months. Well it's still got 2 months to go..

yes it was and we got one 2 years ago for a similar price and paid off over 12months. they've changed the rules now though so the phone has to be worth more than $450 to add it to your account to pay off over 12months. not ideal!

Its a simple matter of cost vs benefit. Telecom is essentially paying interest for that deferred payment as they offer it interest free to customers. In a world of tightening credit it only makes sense that they keep those sorts of options for higher priced phones.
