Hey,

I have two houses: my one in Christchurch, and a holiday home in Queenstown. In Christchurch, I have a Telecom line with a 60GB broadband plan. I currently have a phone line active on the Telecom network at my Queenstown house but do not have an internet plan on it yet. Am I able to bring a router down, and use the same telecom internet account as I do in Christchurch in my Queenstown house? Or do I have to open a new account for this phone line with it's own data allocation? I am only down here for a few weeks a year, so don't want to pay a monthly fee 12 months a year, when I will only use about 4 weeks total of it!!!

Thanks in advance!! :)

Simple answer is no.

While a connection is not specific to an address the line needs to have ADSL provisioned on it. You can't have ADSL provisioned without subscribing to it.

Use xnet so you are not paying for data you dont use if you are getting a fixed connection down there. Otherwise the mobile options are quite workable for short use situations like that.

richms, with xnet if I do not use any data at all in a month does that mean I'll be charged $0 that month?

$0 for data, still have the connection costs however.

You'll be charged the price that corresponds to the "speed" you choose on http://www.xnet.co.nz/hsi/pricing.shtml

Just a point, since sometime last year all new Telecom wholesale connections are infact port tied to your account, the authentication part of PPP is no longer used, or any details ignored, you can pretty much put any rubbish in the username/password and its connects.

prepaid mobile broadband is probably going to be your best option IMO.

unless you *really* need to be downloading the latest linux ISOs or watching youtube 8 hours a day on your holiday (why would you go down to QT to do that?) then 1-2GB of data is probably plenty for some web surfing, email, etc etc.  1GB on prepaid will cost you in the region of $40-60

plus if you do that you can then use skype (which eats very little data unless you use video chat) and ditch your phoneline in your QT house - saving you around $40!
