Why does telecom shut down Evdo so early? Is it not suppose to be in 2012?? Those data users will be irritated..... Bad decision

Interesting - thanks for the info.  This will provide more rationale for me to upgrade to something like the Milestone (assuming it arrives! - I see its not on the TC website yet even though my corporate reseller said two days ago that they were expecting it today)!!

I somehow doubt this is true.  Is there any formal announcement from Telecom to back this up?

There is a LOT of postpaid mobile data customers still on CDMA.  So for someone to say they will turn off mobile data seems very very unlikely.

My bet is the CDMA (including EVDO) network will run well into 2012 or early 2013.  There would be very little cost savings with only turning off the EVDO bit of the network while keeping the rest of the network up.

I can understand that world mode roaming will be shutdown this year, but that would be with the understanding that most customers who needed to roam would have switched to a XT handset which can already roam.

Telecom will know how many users there still are, and how many and how fast they are switching to XT,
I suspect that there will be only a smattering of users still using the current data service, which is why T/Com can have a reasonably early close down date.

So what'll happen to all those folks who've invested in EVDO hardware? :(

You guys must know more than me.  I still very much doubt it consdering the sigificant customers I know run a non-trivial number of systems on EVDO.

Nothing on http://www.telecom-media.co.nz/ either.

It's 'in the known' ... and a lot of us are not in that circle, and Telecom Media will release it when the press release is ready to be released to the media, then at that time Mauricio will have it as well. :-)

Note that CDMA roaming will still be available, it's only the GSM side that's going away.

so does picture messaging on telecom's network use cdma or evdo?

telecom should support evdo until after the rugby world cup in 2011, not until 30 November 2010. what are all the american people who still use evdo going to do when they come to the rugby world cup with their verizon evdo cellphones?

who thinks telecom should extend evdo until after the rugby world cup in 2011?
