So about a month and a half ago I was following a thread about being on XT prepay and using the 500mb data option as it was cheaper. Being the student that I am, the only reason I had the $6 add on was to save me spending $1 if I hit the wrong button on my phone and using data. All I used my phone for was text as the idea was stuck in my head that anything else was too expensive.

A month and a half later and I realise I have changed the way I use my phone. It's not a big deal to call someone and chat for a while (using SIP), or to call someone instead of sending a text (saving my Vodafone friends 20c). It's been great!

Basically my costs have been as follows:
Prior to the change
$12 unlimited text (I never used the data from my $6 add on)
No calls made.

Total: $12

After the change:
$4 on texts while I got used to the idea of calling people more.
5 calls to landlines of around 2min each, cost: data only due to 2talks 15min free each month, about $1 total.
7 calls to mobiles of less than 1min each, cost: data= 70c, call costs 25c/min=$1.75

Total: $7.45

Note: data seems to average at about 1mb/min, so at 10c/mb I have just assumed costs of 10c/min, I realise it is probably a bit more than use due to data used to log into 2talk but then it's making my calculations a bit difficult. Also, data costs will be slightly higher as I was using my Nokia email to check every 15min between 10am-4pm Mon-Fri, but it was set to text only, for 2 accounts.

It's been a really interesting experience. Which makes me wonder what other people do on their phones to either save money or for another reason. It's probably one of the few posts about XT that aren't bashing them for something. :-)

So you skim read my long post and got to here: Tell me what you do to save you money on your cell phone, or just abuse me for my bad maths.

Nick

Hah, unfortunately my degree is food related & not telecommunications, as you can't eat a phone it might be best if I stay away from this idea Laughing

My experience has been interesting too. Hasnt majorly changed my habits as i haven't got a VOIP system setup.

Previously:

Nokia 6585 CDMA phone:
Send texts, receive calls. Never made any calls, just stuck with the round $10txt figure. Very basic phone
Vodafone Prepaid Mobile Broadband:
500mb of data for $30. Used it with my netbook to get online when needed.

Now:

HTC Desire on Telecom XT:
$12 for 2500txts (i still send enough to make this worth it)
$30 for 500mb of data. This is great, i love being able to whip out my phone and look something up, fill in some spare time while waiting for something etc. eg. i was on a fishing trip the past few days, used it to double check minimum sizes and bag limits on the ministry of fisheries website, as well as bag limits.
Additionally the Bonus credit is giving me some freedom - i can now check voicemail and make a few short phone calls without having to worry about not having enough credit.

Tether it to my netbook still for internet use, its noticably faster for internet usage than using the Vodafone USB stick, and the setup time is shorter too - no waiting for the device to become detected and then connect, i just plug the cable in, start internet sharing and it just goes. Where we were staying i had good signal, and page load times when tethered were easily better than many wired ADSL connections ive seen - probably helped the area wasnt populated much though.

I did notice however in the car trip that XT wasn't as saturated coverage, occasional dropouts and low signal, whereas ive done the same trip a few weeks back using the netbook almost the entire trip, and vodafone had usable HSDPA coverage almost the whole way, and only dropped back to GPRS a handful of times.

I have found that since I have had a smartphone with data plan I text a lot less than before.

not because I use VOIP (I don't) but because I use the internet (typically facebook) for most of the stuff I previously did with SMS (arranging nights out, catching up with friends, IM, sending jokes, giving Ozzies heaps of sh1t when they lose at anything, etc etc)

I still use SMS of course, but way less than before.

@eXDee the bonus credit catches me out sometimes because I top up, then don't use enough credit and it's starting to near the expiry date. Time will tell if I lose it or if it carries on. Teach me for being leazy and topping up once every 6 months or so.

@NonprayingMantis there is always facebook 0 to use if you don't want to use data too!
