So I've heard a lot of talk about SIM updates to XT SIM cards which are supposed to update the MBDN field so Blackberry users can use voicemail.

I got the update notice not so long ago:

According to some people who got this update a while ago (ie. it's already happened) report that it does not fix the same issue which plagues iPhone users. Yes I know the iPhone isn't a supported device but surely the fix for Blackberry would also fix the iPhone problem

(nb. the problem with iPhone is that the MBDN field is blank on the SIM card so you can't set a custom number to ring Voicemail like you can for 2degrees/other properly setup SIMs -- I suspect this is the same for the Blackberry).

Can anyone 'in the know' comment on if this update was supposed to fix the MBDN field problem, or will that be fixed by these "V3" sim cards. Is it known when they will be coming out? I know that Micro SIMs are due in early August - will they have the MBDN field properly setup?

Cheers

I suspect this is the reason why my Windows Mobile phone can't dial voicemail without a registry change.

I wonder if this will fix it. I also wonder how we know if the SIM card needs to be updates/has been updated?

They mention on the iPhone New Zealand site that the SIM needs to be physically updated. Telecom made an announcement not too long ago about this update too.

Unfortunately it doesn't give you back the pretty XT Logo on the iPhone, but the voicemail button should start working again.

That's what is assumed, but it is theoretically possible for the field to be fixed by an over-the-air update. From what I understand, this update was supposed to fix it, at least for Blackberry's.

The SIM update refered to above does not update the specific SIM card field mentioned. The SIM update is merely to improve the functionality of the SIM application that handles roaming.
We have NOT agreed or approved an Over the Air (OTA) update of all SIM cards to deal with iphone ios 4 and the latest Blackberry's method of using a SIM field and not the previous SIm phone book entry.

I am aware that the next batch of SIM's to be delivered will have the required SIM field updated with the voicemail access number. However, I personally don't know how these SIM will be indentified or when they will be available.

As an aside the Txt message above was only sent to customers whose devices we had not been able to update during the last month or so. Usulayy this is becuase the device is turned off at night when we do these updates.

Hope this helps.

I wonder whether I have the update. I was using a V2 SIM until about 10 days ago, then I switched from postpaid to prepaid. The prepaid connection was activated on my old V1 SIM so I've been using that for the last 10 days. Are the updates based on the phone number? If so, my V2 SIM may have received the update whilst my V1 SIM could have missed it (but Telecom's system would think it's been updated since the phone number is the same).

Is there a way to tell whether the update's been applied or not? In practical terms, does it even matter?

NealR: So the SIM field that is required for Voicemail on Blackberry/iPhone/WinMo can't be fixed by an over the air update? Don't want to fork out for an entire new SIM when it's not necessary. Thanks for the info!

Just to clarify, I did not say it was not possible but that we had not done the planning and made a decision yet.

Unsure why Telecom call centre, NealR here and twitter want to deny they have the V3 sim cards in stock but I can confirm I went to a Telecom Store today (ChCh) and they replaced my old sim with a V3 one. The voicemail button now works perfectly on my iphone. I know that the cards are also available from 2 other stores in wellington as per comments by users on other forums.

Just to confirm, Telecom DO have V3 sim cards (maybe not in all stores but they have been released) and the voicemail on Iphone now works with that card inserted

Yeah guys, I work @ a dealer store and we definately have what comes up on POS as 'V3 SIM'  and we started ordering them with that name too (e.g. diff product code/barcode and all)

So it's pretty safe to say they are making their way through the channel, just go into your local and ask =]

@camtab I don't recall denying the availability of "V3 SIM" in stores not do I recall @telecomnz denying this. All I said was that "I don't know". Thank's @rupertbg for confirming what's appearing in stores.

I rung the call centre yesterday and they said they werent available, I asked online via the live chat and they said not available and read others ask on twitter but all in the past as it looks like they are freely available in stores and thats great news ;)

Thanks for the updates and a few missunderstandings over a sim still beat Voda hands down for Iphone user experience and service. Love XT!!

freitasm: I also wonder how we know if the SIM card needs to be updates/has been updated?

Well mine updated this morning from V1 to V3 so I'll take a stab at this one. V2 and V3 SIM's have an application that most phones see via their menu (bit like SIM2 on VF ages ago). On my Android phone here it's called SIM Toolkit. The Toolkit also displays the version number (i.e. 2 or 3) and V1 SIM's don't have this.

Not sure on Data Cards customer customer services will be able to inform if required. I've been running a V1 since launch, and have had no significant problems, however if you are roaming and have a V1 SIM then I would advise to get it Swapped to V2 or V3 (free with Telecom Stores and Dealers).

NZBNW - are you saying it updated over the air or you went into the store and physically replaced it?

Over the air. Unless you are having problems or plan to roam in the near future there isn't any real benefit to getting a new SIM instore. Just wait for the over the air update :)
