Hi, I bought an iPad 3G from DSE, went to the XT shop here in Hamilton central, and a nice chap gave me an XT card and sorted out the $12/month prepay data plan on it (although next month I'm swapping to the $29.95/month 500MB plan cos I found out they only charge for what you use at $0.10/MB up to that $29.95)

Anyway I want to be able to check my prepay balance, and perhaps manually change plan online. Unfortunately to register telecom send a TXT message with a code, but I can't receive txts on the iPad.
I went back to the XT store, they couldn't help.

Also any usage alerts are sent via text, which doesn't work either.

One solution would be to find an Iphone 4 and use that temporarily to receive the txt, but I don't have one handy.

Any suggestions how I can sign up to access the online services? Here is the signup page:

when connected to the ipad goto http://yt.telecom.co.nz/mobile to check usage.

If you don't have a password you need to get one txt to you then when you log in you can make a permanent password. If you can't get txt messages on the ipad then you'll need to use another device to set it up then put back in the ipad

Thanks and you can see the problem, only the iPhone4 takes micro sims so far, thus I have to find an iphone 4 (or fashion a micro sim -> sim converter)

Yep damn apple for being outside the normal standard - you can buy adapters but you might be able to make something yourself as a temp solution.

Best of luck

If you have a craft knife and an old EFTPOS/loyalty  card you could go this route

I haven't tried this on an iPad but can you get to http://myhomepage instead of using pdaportal? You shouldn't have to log in when using that one.

Unfortunately not, I get the error "...server cannot be found" - you sure that shouldn't have .telecom.co.nz or something on it?

I believe that you need to use the TelecomContent APN settings. But again, I can't promise that this will work on an iPad.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I tried changing my IPN to wap.telecom.co.nz, and then tried viewing http://myhomepage/ but it didn't work. The only options are:
- IPN
- username
- password

It's a shame there isn't a SIM application to check balance etc, like my Vodafone sim used to have.

The other option is to get a TXT application on the iPad, although not sure any exist yet. SwirllyMMS should be out soon which might work, although this will only work on jailbroken iPads.

Yes it would be nice if Telecom created a proper iPad landing page like vodafone have where you can check your balance and select what data plan you want without having to go through bullsh*t text messages

You can go to http://www.telecom.co.nz/mbbmeter to check your balance... Once you have the initial password setup.

Once you have set the inital password via text (or pm me and I can set it directly) then you have a password good for 365 days.

Thanks Mr Bartender, the password you set worked great. I'm currently sitting in the Corromandel browsing the net, and knowing exactly how much data I've used. No doubt a better solution will come out at some stage. Thanks
