From http://www.theindependent.co.nz/story3.html

Telecom risks being forced to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on a new mobile platform within the next two years.

Some analysts think the closure of the last Australian mobile network using CDMA technology will force Telecom to follow suit.

"We believe Telecom will be compelled to deploy a national GSM-based network in New Zealand within the next two years," sharebroker Goldman Sachs JB Were said in a report last week.

It wasn't Budde for a change, it was JB Were . . Completely off topic but the same company that this week said Lion Nathan would be a keen buyer for Independant Liquor despite Independant saying they are not for sale and the family saying they wouldn't sell to Lion no matter what price they were willing to pay (Michael Erceg absolutely despised Lion)

Most share analysts are full of crap but they have to write something and the scary thing is people believe them!

Telecom's made a huge gamble going with CDMA rather than starting from scratch on a GSM network but it has certainly paid off for them.

If Telecom switched to gsm then they'd be the first beneficiary of the network piggybacking regulations - can you taste the irony...

Jaffa: IF telecom were to build a gsm network they should join up with econet and colocate panels on their 027 towers.... Could be interesting but there is more chance of me becomming an astronaught lol

Why would they want to do that when they already have their own network of sites already?

To really cause a bit of speculation I heard that Telecom have apparently looked at WCDMA850 as an option for the coming years. As it would share their existing spectrum they could easily deploy both CDMA and WCDMA once the AMPS network is shut down, and because WCDMA 850 has similair coverage characteristics as CDMA800 they would not require large numbers of additional sites like Vodafone do for WCDMA @ 2100MHz.

Any Telecom people like Jama want to completely deny this?

nzdn Telecom would not get access to Vodafone's NZs GSM network as they already have a mobile network that covers NZ.

I am quite sure the act is only for new mobile entrants not mobile providers in NZ that already have a network and Telecom NZ have 2 mobile networks 025/027.

Do you think Vodafone would get access to Telecom's CDMA (027) network.

I think he's talking about the mandatory roaming if Telecom were to release a WCDMA network.

The real question here surrounds the long term future of CDMA technology. With an enormous number of users in Korea and North America, and recent market penetration in Europe, I think we can be pretty confident that CDMA technology will continue to evolve. Telecom now has a good selection of handsets, a solid 3G offering, and a promising technology roadmap for mobile data technologies.

The only doubt that lingers in my mind is the roaming issue. Considering that the majority of global roaming users would be high ARPU customers, I think that the demise of the Australian CDMA networks will be a major blow to Telecom and it will be interesting to see how they deal with this.

Well Im a gsm supporter but I would add who cares what Telecom use CDMA or GSM.

I mean there customers are happy on 025 / 027 they are getting more connections than Vodafone, kids love the $10.00 txt deal. My kids (teenagers) all they see is Telecom mon to frid is $10.00 txt and they use their Vodafone on the weekends as its free txt they dont care if its CDMA or GSM just as long as it does what they want for them and the phones are basically the same.

If I want a mobile broadband connection all I would look at is whats best for me - CDMA / GSM so what. If the Telecom card works in more places and is faster I would use that data card or I would look at the best pricing deal. If I travelled to the UK I would use a Vodafone data card.

I do have a choice.

Telecom will get smarter phones and in fact have mp3 phones and will some daybe able to do video calling and life will carry on.

Somewhere down the road all these standards will merge or phones will have chipsets that work (they have these now in the US that work on CDMA and GSM)

We are going to get number portability this year so your number can go with you from Telecom to Vodafone or Vodafone to Telecom.

Its a bit like the Holden verses Ford - whats better whos better - both these v8's etc are unheard of and unused outside of NZ and Ozy and they are still making them and we are buying them because thats what we want.

Like most people we choose to use what is best for us at the time.

Interesting read in Communications Day (E-Paper from OZ) saying that Telstra, Ericsson and Lucent are pushing for TCNZ to go UMTS.

Lucent is currently working with Cingular in the US developing a 850MHZ UMTS solution (The same as what Telstra is building in OZ) and are wanting TCNZ to do the same. The push form Telstra is probably more to do with the fact that TCNZ by way of AAPT owns a 850MHz spread in OZ. Huchinson in OZ are also winding down there CDMA network in favour of UMTS
