In another thread, someone has mentioned that number portability should be available later this year, and I'm curious to know if anyone has more specific details about this. My vague recollection is that the Commerce Commission requires that this service be available next year, but I'm guessing that the telcos will want to have things ready to go this year so that they have an opportunity to iron out all the bugs.

Does anyone know what the state of progress is at the moment, or are the telcos keeping tight-lipped?

I was involved in some RFP responses for Number Portability earlier in 2005. For what I've seem then you might be out of luck trying to get information about of the operators or the regulator...

But if anyone else has some information, not under NDA or confidential label, I would be happy to read about it too...

Availability of Number Portability Services to End-users
326. The TCF has indicated on the basis of its implementation programme that the Number Portability Services will be available to end-users on 1 April 2007. The Commission understands that the TCF has requested specific information from its members on implementation in order to assess whether the availability date for local telephone number portability might be brought forward.
327. Accordingly, parties are required to provide the Number Portability Services consistent with this determination not later than 1 April 2007.

Obtained from page 62 of the Commerce Commission Website

A Soft Launch Proposal is to be submitted to the Commission by no later than 29.09.2006 & a written report on this is due to be submitted on 01.02.2007, as per the Commission Website.

I hope this helps.
